Butterfly paperweight ID help please
« on: January 05, 2018, 10:46:09 AM »
Hello, would anyone be able to identify this one please. I saw one similar, but with a boat not a butterfly, and it was described as having been made in Belgium in the 1920s/1930s. It is about 7.5cm across. There is a pit or crater in the bottom, several mm deep, that seems to have been made during manufacture as the edges are smooth,
Thank you.

These are believed to have been made in England at Pilkington's Glass Works St Helens by Czech employees. I have a small collection mostly sourced from within 15 miles of the factory. Type Pilkington in the search box here and you will see (there are two pages) http://www.lustrousstone.co.uk/cpg/search.php

Thank you very much for the post and the link - very interesting. I just did a search on Google and it led me to posts from several years ago on this forum - someone said the workers came over in the 1960s. Also, from something else I saw it suggested that the pws might not have been officially produced. Maybe the workers made them in their spare time and sold them locally to make a bit of cash, which is why you sourced most of yours in the St. Helens area?

I have also seen others locally that I have not bought because they have been overpriced for a minor area of interest to me. The ones with blueish glass are more widespread because they were made as souvenirs of the (then) onsite museum.

Here is that sailing boat weight for reference, I had not noticed the similarity to these possibly Pilkington weights.

That one has more varied colours and the glass is blueish compared with the Pilkington ones

In sunlight it is quite clear, all my photographs these days are under fluorescent light.
