Cameo style vase
« on: February 06, 2018, 08:57:55 AM »
Hi I have  a recent find here in the Cameo style.

It measures 22cm tall, neck 13cm, base 5.5cm across with the bulb of the vase measuring 40cm around its body.

Some of the applied (raised) decoration is not complete. Any ideas as to manufacturer or age?

not cameo. your decoration is applied gilt enamel  -  your glass appears to be 'Peachblow' - a heat sensitive/reactive glass, produced in both the States and the U.K.           assuming this is a genuine period example it might possibly be from Thomas Webb c. 1880.
Use the Board's search facility with Peachblow, and you should get a lot to read .................  the origins of the name make for interesting reading.

That's gorgeous.  Is it heavy to hold?
Also have a look at the Gilded Curio website as A has quite a few of these pieces iirc. so would be interesting for you to have a comparison look.

some years back I found a piece very similar at a boot sale early one cold Sunday morning, for £2  -  sadly now gone :'(             They do glow, of course, assuming you have a u.v. torch.

I suspect yours is Bohemian, probbaly Harrach, as the enamel under the gilding looks yellow (rather than dark, as is typically English) and has a lot of wear. Webb gilding of this type wears better than Harrach gilding

Very informative morning so far for me, thanks. It appears that the a feature of the English work is the white interior, this one appears to have a green one on on first inspection, laided over a white one. this is either a build up of grim, tobacco or more likely as it gets blotchy further down the neck, an applied finish.

It is also possible it is three layered.
Is it uranium glass?

I agree with Christine - do take a look at the Gilded Curio site and see if A has similar pieces.
