Blue glass ‘splash’ bowl with dimpled/hatched base.
« on: August 29, 2018, 07:09:55 PM »
Hi, I’ve no real idea on this but love the colour. The pulled lobe and splash shapes don’t seem uncommon but I’ve not seen that sort of impression on the base before. The base looks hatched but is a grid of small concave dimples, I assume impressed from the surface it was resting on whilst the glass was still hot. I have searched the message board for previous posts of dimpled bases but have only found:
https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,46891.msg263718.html#msg263718
which shows (possibly) an Empoli vase.

The bowl is about 8.5 inch diameter, 4 inches tall and weighs 1.8kg. There is quite a bit of wear to the base and wear inside like it’s held a flower pot or something. Any information on age, origin etc is appreciated, thanks.

I think it could be a large ashtray.  Its very similar to these Swedish ones seen here https://www.bigashtray.com/product/colorful-hand-made-art-glass-ashtray-set/
Faglavik made something similar I seem to recall from the distant past.

Thanks Anne, I’ll have a look at Fagavik.
The ashtrays in your link do look similar thanks, although the lobes look more flat, shame they don’t show the base. Unfortunately, I’m not a smoker so can’t test my bowl as an ash tray but it seems unnecessarily large and impractical to be a purpose made. It is quite deep so the cigarets would fall to the bottom and probably be awkward to balance on the small dips between lobes.

Hi all, how about Ercole Barovier, Grosse Costolature bowl for this? There’s one on the link below that looks the same and there’s one on Etsy that you can see the base and it’s dimpled like mine, but it has additional lobes. There seem to be plain ones and more complex ones. I realise that items aren’t always what they’re claimed to be so wondered what the experts thought, thanks.

I have also seen similar baskets that are described as Chalet Glass or Chantili glass (who were actually a distributor for Chalet). The baskets have two of the lobes extended to meet in the centre to make a handle, they also have crimped type feet.

There’s an interesting article on Chalet Artistic Glass here: http://www.antique67.com/articles.php?article=79
I see they started off calling themselves Murano Glass!

There is a smaller version of this here: https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,59204.msg334878.html#msg334878 .It is clear and has fewer lobes but the same textured base.

In this thread: https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,35604.msg193217.html#msg193217 there is another one of a smaller size but with a ground base and circle in the bottom inside. That one, matches a labeled Altaglass (Canada) example. Earlier in that thread, Ivo mentions Empoli or Altare or from Spain as possible makers for this sort of thing (the smaller versions anyway).

I still think Chalet glass Canada is a good possibility or maybe a version from Altaglass.

There is a good website for Chalet Glass from Deborah Patterson that I think must be quite new: https://www.chaletvintageartglass.ca There are lots of articles, in this one there is a simple Chalet ashtray shown with dimpled base:
https://www.chaletvintageartglass.ca/articles/f8o59io2whz6jrws4ar86hu1ck70zl

She says the ashtray in the article was made by Chalet artist Roberto De Marchi and ‘Chalet produced quite a number of these for the hotel trade’. Although the ashtray in the article is more simple than my bowl, the base impression looks the same. I feel sure my bowl will be Chalet Glass.

I have searched the message board for previous posts of dimpled bases but have only found:
https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,46891.msg263718.html#msg263718
which shows (possibly) an Empoli vase.

I now realise the dimple base on the vase in the link is almost certainly an artefact of the optic moulding, and although it looks similar to the base of my bowl, it is not created in the same way and is not related.

Two similar form eight lobed Chalet Glass bowls, distributed by Chantili, one with Chantili label:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/265293396846?hash=item3dc4b7fb6e:g:GZQAAOSwbRFhLo1d

The bowls look like variations of the two clear examples in my last photo. The one with label has additional hatched crimps below the valleys of the pulled lobs. The other has six of eight lobes extended with two used to form basket handles. Both bowls have the hatched base like mine although looking more crisp.

There is a new article from Deborah Patterson on Bomboniere. Rather than being ashtrays, these smaller bowls were made by Chalet (and other companies) to be used at special events such as weddings to contain nuts etc. There are many variations shown, most have the hatched type base.
