Swirled, opaque glass... incense holder? Signed
« on: September 15, 2018, 08:21:00 PM »
Would love ideas not only on who made this but WHAT it is too. This piece measures 4 1/4" high and is signed and dated on the bottom. Can anyone make it out? Second photo is showing reflections of the lightbox I'm using. Swirls are the pattern, not the dark and light circles.

That is chalcedony glass but that does not help with an ID. Maybe an American studio glass maker active in 1973.

John

Thank you for the replies and thanks for the glass terminology lesson, John. Love expanding my knowledge and vocab. Do you guys read "Warren" as the last name? Not sure about the lamp base idea. Hole in the top certainly suggests it could have been but there is no hole in the bottom for a cord (just a big pontil mark) and the piece is too small and light IMO to balance the weight.

I see Warren and Weaver...

Frederick leads to this: https://www.rubylane.com/item/545225-RL-653/Signed-Art-glass-Slag-Vase-Frederick

Wow, nice find glassobsessed! Signatures seem to match. I searched his name and discovered he's from Muskegon, MI. A search for Fred Warren in Michigan on Whitepages came up with a Fred Murray Warren,  which would match what looks to be an "M" middle initial in the signature on my piece who is related to some Van Hassel's (one of which he apparently apprentices).

Excellent research glassobsessed, thank you! I would never have gotten "Frederick" from that signature.  Turns out this might be a really nice find :)

I sill have no idea what to call this.  Isn't there a particular name for vases with small openings like this? Not a bud vase I don't think...

I think Fred is still making. at least he was a few years ago. I have some water glasses that he made many years ago. He made a lot of his own silver glasses. contact him and see if can shed an light on this item.

Thank you. Great idea to reach out to the artist. They might get a kick out of seeing a piece from 40  years ago.

I wondered about that middle initial, my brief search did not throw up a middle name. Finding his middle name Murray is a bit of 'icing on the cake' in terms of identifying the vase, a good piece of extra confirmation.
