This very small weight just 35mm diameter by 20mm high appears to actually be a ground down stopper to me, it seems to be French but I am unsure as to the maker, Baccarat is my thought?

Many thanks
Nick

Hi Nick

I don't recognose the canes as antique French.  To me they seem to resemble some of the poorer 1950s - 1960s Baccarat canes.  Is it lead crystal?  If not, it might be worth thinking about Scottish rather than French.

Hi Alan
Hmm hadn't considered Scottish, it is lead crystal, I'll start looking for a cane match.

Looks like an unusual Ysart Brothers item to me. The lower canes and base working look a bit odd. Is there a full white ground of some sort, or is that a trick of the light?

No that's just a white background, it's clear glass but the area below the canes is streaked with aventurine, does it look like a ground down stopper to you?

The canes look too neat/well made compared to all the bar set ones I've seen also this is smaller than the ones I've had/seen

The size matches several of the "Vasart" (Ysart Brothers) inkwell stoppers I have seen.

All of the bar set items I have [a 6 item set + 4 individual pieces] are larger, at 40 mm x 30 mm.

Also just noticed ... the second photo shows what looks like grey / white powdered striping (but which does not show in the fourth photo). This adds to the id as a cut down stopper from a Vasart inkwell. Probably 20 stripes in all.
