Dating a Bimini button Made in England
« on: November 27, 2018, 07:08:56 PM »
Many years ago, I bought an old tin full of buttons from a charity shop in Sussex, and only recently did some research on the contents. Amongst many lovely buttons, I discovered a large black, 'knobbly' glass button with silver inset  and on the back brass shank is imprinted 'BIMINI LTD MADE IN ENGLAND' plus the flowerpot logo. The shank is a bit tarnished, i.e. has evident age.I am confused about dates though. Did Lampl change the name to Orplid before/after the Soho works were bombed and he was released from detention? Could anyone kindly clarify? I feel a hobbie coming on.

Hi MissBabs welcome to the board. Bimini buttons have been mentioned before on the board. A quick search brings back these results...

https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,9243.0.html - Glass Buttons
https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,11488.0.html - Bimini and Orplid buttons

And from the board owner's websites...

On the Glass Encyclopaedia
Bimini - http://www.glassencyclopedia.com/Biminiglass.html
Orplid - http://www.glassencyclopedia.com/Orplidglass.html

On the Glass Museum
Bimini and orplid Glass - http://www.theglassmuseum.com/bimini.htm (scroll down)

There's also Angela Bowey's introductory book "London Lampworkers" https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,51531.0.html

Hope this helps.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd
