Whitefriars Parker Pen Holder/Ashtray...
« on: August 17, 2006, 08:13:44 AM »
I recently bought one of these in a charity shop:

AUCTION (I'll update with a photo of the one I actually bought when I have chance to)

It too is missing its pen. So I was wondering if anyone knew the model of pen which should live in it so I can hunt for a replacement?

Also, were there catalogue numbers for these types of commission pieces? It looks like an amalgm of patterns 9151 and 9099.

Finally, when were they made, and who designed them? It's in Arctic Blue, so it's post-1959.

Thanks in advance!  :D

I seem to recall my late uncle having one of these when I was young. The pen was a black one that echoed the shape of the holder and narrowed to a point at the top to mirror the nib end at the bottom. (Not a very good description - sorry - but it is rather hard to describe - even if I can see it quite clearly in my mind!)

According to Whitefriars.com it was a gold-tipped Parker 51 pen... these are currently retailing at around the £30-40 mark on eBay.

I think my holder will go pen-less for a while yet!

Interesting, Nic. That wasn't what he had in his. I wonder if his was a replacement pen rather than the original? In fact, his wasn't a fountain pen either but a ballpoint one.

The pen you described seems to go with the round paperweight pen-holders WF made for Parker - apparently a special edition of the 51.

I don't know if that edition was also used for the ashtray pen-holder, as I've only found one photograph of a complete one, and that had a common-or-garden 51 pen in it... next to a paperweight one, also with an ordinary 51 in it. So both of the pens could be replacements (I'll probably have to settle for an ordinary one too, eventually).

Also, the info I've gleaned from WF.com would suggest that they all were supplied with ballpoint pens originally.

Hurray - picked up a replacement gold pen for £20 today.

Does anyone know who designed the glass, though? I'm guessing at William Wilson... whether that's an educated guess or not is debatable.

Still waiting the pic of yours Nic. The original auction link has expired.

Here's mine (no pen).  I would like to know the colour. Designer would be interesting too. I prefer it to the ball / paperweight holder.

Oh yes, right you are, Pete. I never got around to photographing mine.... it's currently in use as a place to sling my loose change.  ;D

I'll see if I can remember to do it next time I've got my equipment set up.

Not sure yours is a WF one, though. Colour and shape don't look like anything I've seen from the factory.
