Welz or Ruckl??? Uranium Vase.
« on: June 10, 2020, 01:53:27 PM »
I've posted this vase elsewhere and it started a rather controversial "discussion" but it's such a spectacular piece I thought I'd show it. it's 23cm. wide, 20cm. tall and weighs 2.4kg. The "mushroom" shape is similar to ones attributed to Ruckl and the vertical stripes are similar to Welz but not so far found in this colourway. It's amazing under UV.

The shape of the base looks like it might have once sat in some sort of holder, if it was not so large I would have suggested a reservoir for an oil lamp. Bit big for that though...

Thanks John. There don't seem to be any signs it fitted in a holder and like you say if it was full of oil with a lamp on top it would be too big and also weigh a ton. I've only seen one other, in Ruckl section II of the rucklczglass.com site, which is close to the rather curious design.

The Ruckl website is one of the less reliable ones...so unless it's got a label I'd take a second opinion

Thanks Christine, that was the opinion I got when I posted it elsewhere. If pushed, just from the vertical line decor, I'd say it is by Welz, but as I said this is not a known colourway.

Have you looked at Scailmont?

I don't know if they did stripes but whenever I see something in these beigy colours I think of French of Belgian glass  :-[

I couldn't see anything with stripes on a quick search and that does seem to have been a Welz preserve somewhat but can we see a clear close up of the actual stripes please?

Hello flying free, I've just had a look at Scailmont glass and couldn't find anything similar either. I do think it probably is a Welz vase but still reserve judgment. I've added a couple more pics.

The stripes look as though they are formed with copper aventurine.

I have two Welz vases in green and white with the green stripes being formed from what looks like green aventurine. They do look similar to yours in the way the stripes have been formed.

However Kralik also made large vases.  Yours appears to have a 'checked' decor formed from the stripes.  Kralik used a checked decor in stripes and also a striped decor.  Have a look at Kralik-glass.com and then click on ball vases.  There are various decors on that link.

I think Kralik could also be a contender.

I think it fits in better with the Welz "vertical stripes" decors on the same website. http://kralik-glass.com/frametemplate.html

I do think the aventurine stripes are formed in a similar way yes.

This is the Welz vase I have - photo where you can see the green aventurine forming the stripes:
