Ricepaper Doily 14" Pink Platter - ID = Sydenstricker Glass
« on: August 29, 2006, 12:02:07 PM »
I bought this beautiful 14", 12 flute platter yesterday.  It has a signature which I can barely see and have tried to photograph.

Under a magnifying glass it looks like it might have been made by covering a ricepaper doily with glass................I simply can't imagine any other way it could have been done so I can hardly wait to hear if anyone knows!

Where it looks black it is clear glass

Thank you for looking

Hi Cat,

I reckon you're right: This was probably enamel sprayed after putting the template over.

Can't tell you who made it, although I suspect it's reasonably modern. Very nice design :P

That signature looks very much like Mtarfa to me. Can we get Sue (chopin-liszt) to have a look at it as well?

Doesn't look like Mtarfa style to me, but I'll drop Sue an e-mail.

That's what's puzzling me, David. The style of the piece isn't what we expect from Mtarfa but the sig looks like it.  :?

Depends who signed it as there are quite a few variations! "Mr. Mtarfa" was quite prolific

I have a couple on file that I'll post.

Sure can, Cat. There's a not very clear one here in labels:
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-950 and some slightly clearer ones here:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,2466.msg18315.html#msg18315 (various ones throughout this thread). Hope this helps. :)

I found one on another thread and it could be Mtarfa................tried to have a look at their website to see the range of their products but their account has been suspended!

It might be a case of waiting until somebody else finds a piece like it with a label..............
