ID Help for Murano Bowl, Vase, Lighter Please :)
« on: August 31, 2006, 07:55:31 PM »
Hello, all...
I believe this lighter/vase is by Barbini but could use some confirmation or other ideas about who might be the artist. Any ideas?

This vase looks to me to be a "clam shell" vase but I don't know to whom it should be attributed. If it's not a clam shell, any suggestions about what is it's proper name?

This is one of my favorite bowls. Again, I assume that it's Murano but don't know the artist. Any help would be fabulous.

Hi again,
since posting this message originally, I've had the lighter confirmed as Barbini. I've been told that the "clam" vase is probably Cenedese but still no comments on the bowl. I suspect Barbini on that one as well but confirmation would be fabulous. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bidda

I'm curious as to whom confirmed the lighter as Barbini, and why.

The clam shaped bowl is not Cenedese.  I don't know who made it, but the Cenedese clam bowls don't have that kind of workmanship, nor the bullicante.

The third (my favorite) is most likely Barbini.

Laura,
someone on another Murano board told me that it was Barbini but I haven't found an exact match to confirm or refute yet. Do you have another idea? :)

The clam shaped bowl is a mystery to me as well. Again, on another board I was told that it was probably Cenedese but I've never seen another one like this, with the bullicante (as you mentioned) or the pulled bits at the center of each rim? Again, any other ideas are welcome :)

The third bowl is my favorite of the three for sure. The colors blend so expertly and the shape is wonderful. I don't know if it's my favorite piece all told but it's certainly in the running :D

Thanks for your input,

Bidda

Hi Bidda,

For the lighter, I'd think Fratelli Toso before Barbini, as the decoration seems more in the vein of their bowls/ashtrays.

Laura,

I have seen similar one's, in shape as well as decoration (pink glass with gold bullicante), attributed to Barbini by people who's opinions I respect but I must confess that I know very little about Fratelli Toso design and how to identify such pieces. So it seems I've got some further research to do in order to decide to which of the two this lighter should be attributed... not that I mind research :)

Bidda,

The Barbini objects I've seen have bullicante without colored inclusion. They tend to be solid color on the exterior (often pastels), with bullicante and gold dust.  Your lighter has colored inclusions around the bullicante, which I've never seen on a labeled piece of Barbini. That does't mean that they didn't make it, just that it's unusual.  On the other hand, I have seen that kind of blend of bullicante and colored inclusions on Fratelli Toso pieces.

That makes sense.

Thanks,
Bidda

Whoever made them, they are three gorgeous pieces. I see items like this all the time at flea markets here in the States, where a lot of Murano was sold as important glass art in the 1950s and 1960s. What is the general value of items like this.

Thanks, Wrightoutlook,

I'm happy that you like them.

I wouldn't venture to guess about values as I'm a novice in collecting glass of Murano. It is important to realize, however; that appraised value, resale value and Ebay resale value are very different. Appraised value (on most things)  is usually slightly inflated. What one can expect from a private or regular auction sale is less then the appriased value but more than Ebay resale. At least that is what I've noticed.
Bidda :)
