Hello all
Not sure who made this, and there are absolutely no markings anyplace on the piece. There was a hint of a reference in Jenny Thompson's book (no illustrations) saying that dogs were made, many with no marks (books are packed away, so I cannot reference exact page). This was in the Derbyshire chapter. This piece has a base that is 4 1/4" in diameter (10.7 cm) and it is 4 5/8" tall (12.2 cm). The base is hollow, up into the body. I think the only chance of identifying it might be by the shape of the base. The mould was 3 piece. the top of the head shows where all of the mold pieces came together, giving it a very flat brow/ridge, just above the eyes. Anyone have any thoughts on this piece? It is flint glass. I just got it from a seller in England. The cost was about 60 GBP by the time I got done with shipping.

Dave:
I'm thinking this is Baccarat. Look through the back issues of PressGlas Korrespondenz for catalog reprints from this factory from the 1870 - 80 period. I do not have access to my files at this time so can't look for it myself.
My dog is frosted clear lead glass. There is a matching cat which has been reproduced in the 1950s.

Sid, the seller said that she also had the cat, but it was too damaged, and was disposed of! (DAMN!!!). It was also vaseline glass.

That is a real shame! The cat's ears are almost always chipped.

Well done Sid.
Besides the animal and human figures, watch out for the old rugged cross by Derbyshire, a rarity. I've only seen one. It has the "JD" trademark on the base, unusual as many glass houses would not put a commercial mark on a religious object. The bull's head piano insulator is another rarity, again I've only seen the one, badly chipped.

Be aware that if there is a ridge underneath the sockle you may be looking at the Czech version modeled after the Baccarat version; Marc Christoph mentions this in the article.

I can't read German (and thanks for pointing it out) but the only one I saw in the article with the ridge was the cat version. Mine does not have a ridge, so I think I am safe.
Bernard: I also have a photo around somewhere of a ram's head piano insulator. The person that bought it on ebay donated it to the Broadfield House museum. I *think* it is also a Derbyshire. I was not aware of the old rugged cross. I will have to keep my eyes peeled for that one.
