Sommerso Cartoony Fish
« on: September 04, 2006, 07:45:27 PM »
I'm trying to focus my collecting on higher end pieces, but this cartoony fish forced me to buy him (or her).  Sort of reminds me of the fanciful sea creatures that the Italians drew on their maps during the 1500s.  Anyhow, I'm hoping my fishy was made by a reputable producer (Barbini?).  Doesn't have a tremendous amount of "shelf wear," but I don't believe the Muranese are producing these forms currently.  Any help would be appreciated.
Charles.

Hey!  I've got one a bit similar to this, although not so pretty

Do you think they could be related?  http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/albums/userpics/10048/normal_Human_fish.jpg

Leni-
The fishes do seem to bear some family resemblance, but popular forms of fish and fowl were produced by more than one glass factory.  I've seen your piece (i.e. with gold inclusions and on a stand, unlike mine) being marketed as Barbini, which is what gives me some hope.  Also, the sommerso effect and palate reminds me of my signed Barbini apple and pear set.
Charles.
