Not rare, Blair, but not common either.    Davidson only seem to have made matt black in smallish quantities, and at the two extremes of their manufacture of the 8" 279.    The early matt black from the late '20s is typified by the 291 Tutankhamun square bowl.    The late matt black from the late '50s is typified by the 518 oval footed bowl, made from a modified late pre-war Grecian mould.

I don't know to which of these two periods of matt black your vase belongs, but I think it much more likely to be the earlier.    This view would be strengthened if the 6" or 10" 279 were known in matt black, as these two sizes had a shorter production period than the 8".

I'll just second everything Bernard said but I look out for these vases and it's the first matte-black one I've seen

My other point is to make sure you target the UK market specifically if/when you sell on eBay!

I've just had an email reminding me that the matt black 279 on offer at one of the 2005 Cambridge Glass Fairs was a 10".   So, a late '20s date is indicated.

It's most pleasing to clear that one up so quickly, and further demonstrates the usefulness of the GMB.

Thanks to my source.

All three sizes were being made up untill the start of the war. They do not appear to have been made regularly after the war as the do not appear in either the 1953 catalogue, 1954 prices list or the 1961 price list.

The most likely period for these vases is 1923 to 1930.
