Lalique Lotus Bowl & Underplate Question
«
on:

I know this is in bad form, however I am stuck trying to find a value on a Lalique Lotus pattern small bowl with underplate. I do not know if this set is a finger bowl or
?, but I cannot find any value for it anywhere probably because it's tableware. It is signed, but frankly not an exciting pattern & it's very thin glass. Any help is appreciated, thanks, Ken

Value will depend on the finish. Some examples have enamelling on the underside, these fetch considerably more than the plain ones.
Presently M and D Moir are offering a lotus bowl & underplate (with enamel) for £295 GBP, though this is quite a high dealer price and more than I would be happy to pay for the pattern.

Rago sold a set of 4 bowls & underplates, again with enamel, for $360 USD in October 05, though they were estimated higher at $600-$800.

Steven that is most appreciated. I found a set of 7 bowls & underplates all good for $700 US or $100 each. Obviously that is too high which I wondered since it's tableware. Again I appreciate the info & advice. Ken

I wouldn't say $100 USD each for a bowl & underplate was too high; It seems very good value to me. I would certainly be tempted at that price myself.

Somewhere along the way of establishing value -we seem to have lost our way?
The Lotus bowl and plate -yes they are meant to be together -was a very popular Rene Lalique design and hence it is relatively common. -strangely many other parts of the service are very rare.
The two together are an almost perfect 3 dimentional representation of a lotus flower with petals going out at 45 degrees (the bowl) and horizontally (the plate) -with black enamelling for the stamens. Frankly quite stunning.
They are made of very thin and fragile glass and 90% of he ones I seen have been damaged and/or reduced -whatever the sellers say!
but I must admit bias as I'm MandDMoir
cheers

Thanks for the input Mike...yes they certainly are fragile, probably the most fragile glass I've ever seen as they are as light as plastic about a 1/32 of an inch thickness. Ken
