Help dating a Strombergshytten vase please
« on: March 13, 2023, 03:04:07 PM »
Hi all :-)

I've just picked up a little Strombergshytten vase, from my local charity shop, and am hoping someone can decipher the final bit of the engraved code, and/or give me a date?

The engraving reads: "Strombergshytten B882 C859".

The B882 refers to the vase shape I understand, but I don't know what the last bit is.

Photos below.

TIA

Steve

In the Strombergshyttan notes in the smoke and ice book, it puts the date of manufacture of your vase at between 1954 and 1959.
It also says the engraving has a design code consisting of a letter and a series of numbers.
Hope this is of some use.

Thank you Tim - great info! It's about as old as me then... but in way better condition ;-)

So to clarify, the first part of the code, B882, refers to the vase shape, and the second part, C859, refers to the design, i.e. the Viking Longship in this case... yes?

That's as i understand it.
I don't think you ever get to find out who actually engraved the glass.
There were so many designs to choose from i suppose they needed a number that big.
Similar vintage to me as well.

Hi. Is the design definitely engraved or is it sandblasted?

Hi Steve and all. A bit more info for you...

Ivo Haanstra's excellent little book (Miller's glass fact file A-Z) states that the B means it's a vase (actually "blomglas" i.e. a flower vase).

I found your vase pattern 882 in the 1970 Strombergshytten catalogue on here (page 6) https://bergdala-glastekniska-museum.se/nedladdning/strombergshyttan/BGM_01_722-strombhytt-1970-80-tal-kat.pdf and on page 24 of the same catalogue your C859 is shown as the engraved boat design on the vase.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

That is a much more comprehensive reply than mine Anne. :)
I checked in my Swedish factories book and there is the start of a number run in 1954 (642) which ends in 1959/60 at 972.
That's about the end of the information in that book.
Maybe some reclassification along the way?

Hi. Is the design definitely engraved or is it sandblasted?

It's engraved. Quite deeply in places, and feels a bit "3D". The shields along the boat are polished to clear.

I'd been meaning to get a copy of Ivo's book for ages... now ordered.

Yes, I'd found the vase shape in that catalogue, but hadn't realised that there were designs further down, so thanks for that info. The C859 design is slightly different to my vase - mine has no seagulls, and the waves are different, so either a slightly different version, or maybe there was a degree of artistic license allowed?
