Help with a Davidson registration number
« on: September 14, 2006, 09:46:40 PM »
Hi all,
Could anybody tell me the best place to look up a registration number? I have what I think is a Davidson pressed glass cake stand with Rd254037 on it and I would like to know if there is a definitive guide I can reference to find out more about it.
Many thanks,
Hil

Hi Hil,
This is a great place to start.
http://www.great-glass.co.uk/glass%20notes/numbers.htm
and the only place that I know of.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

Online reference is here as Della says: http://www.great-glass.co.uk/glass%20notes/numbers.htm covers both the older style diamond marks and the later RD nos.

In book form, Jenny Thompson's The Identification of English Pressed Glass covers the years to 1908, and the Glass Association's Blue Book covers the years from 1908.

Rd no 254037 isn't shown in the listing but 254027 is...(is the no in your post correct?). 254027 is dated 1 May 1895, registered by Geo Davidson, Teams Flint Glass Works, Gateshead-on-Tyne.

If you would like to post a picture of your piece that would be nice.  See pic stickie post here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6522.0.html

that pattern has been given the name of SOMERSET.  (of course, it was never named by the factory).  in my book VASELINE GLASS: CANARY TO CONTEMPORARY, there is a catalog illustration that shows what I think is most of the pattern.  you can see other pieces in this pattern at

this is from the vaselineglass.org website.

Hi All,

Davidson called this pattern the 1896 suite.

On closer inspection the number is 254027 (not as I posted originally).

I have some more unmarked Davidson pieces that I will post later, in hope that someone will be able to identify them if that is ok?

You are all brilliant and your help is appreciated. Thank you all once again.

A very nice-looking cakestand and it appears to be in good condition (hope I look as good when I'm 110!   )

Glad we solved that puzzle for you - do feel free to post any other queries that you need help with.  8)

Thank you Anne. I like it and I use it several times a year for Birthday Cakes for the family.

as for the age of it - am I right to assume that I will never be sure of it's exact age on account of not knowing how long it was produced for, after the pattern registration? They could have made them for 50 years for all I know

I have another one that I don't think 'quite so pretty' which I will post on a new topic with my other unidentified/unmarked pieces of Davidson.
Many thanks
Hil.

Yes, Hil, you're pretty much right. The pattern was called the 1896 Suite as Chris Stewart said (design registered in 1895) but could have been made for many years - although I seem to recall someone on the board (possibly Adam D?)  telling me that after WW2 cakestands tended to have metal stands rather than glass ones so that may narrow it down further.  Chris may be able to add more to this as he is researching Davidson patterns for his next book so it may be a question he can answer fairly easily. (I don't recall it being mentioned in the first book but I could be wrong!)
