Orangey Czech/Sklo? Help please :-)
« on: October 17, 2006, 10:08:04 AM »
I'm a real Sklo Union glass fan but this is something I've not seen before - it's an unusual orangey peachy colour and looks 1930's ish to me with a pattern of vertical lines and oval lenses, it also has the typical ground down base one would expect of a Sklo Union piece.  I think it's definitely Czech but is it too early to be Sklo Union? Could it be one of the early moulds produced later?  Perhaps it's not even Czech at all!  I'm confused and any help regarding IDing and dating this would be fab and much appreciated, as ever.

Hi Pip,
Glen will be along soon no doubt to correct me, :D but this looks like it might be a pattern known as Bohemian Ovals, which was made by Josef Inwald. This would pre-date Sklo Union by forty-five years or more.
Regards,
Marcus

Snap!  Here's mine:  http://i11.tinypic.com/2u8axiw.jpg

I see this type of vase fairly regularly in Kent.  I can't say I'm particularly enamoured by them or the colour to be honest.

PS:  oh yeah, I think Marcus is right, I saw this vase on her site I think.  Lost the bookmark now due to AOL problems.   :x

I don't think it's Inwald's Bohemian Ovals (the name was given to the pattern by Carnival collectors - and it is known in a few scarce Carnival examples). The Bohemian Ovals pattern doesn't have the intervening verticals - only the ovals. You can see an example near the bottom of this page.

Can you check the base (underneath) of the vase? Is it mirror polished shiny? That's an Inwald characteristic. If it isn't, then maybe we have to look elsewhere.

The vase rings a bell with me, I must say. I don't recall it in Carnival though. I'm really rushed at the moment on a project (with a deadline) so I can't do a thorough search right now. But someone else will surely know

Please don't call it ''Bohemian Ovals'' though, Pip. It will only confuse things.

No no I won't but I was going to suggest it was possibly Inwald and probably 1930's ish - vague is good enough for me in this instance.

The nearest I can get to an ID right now is that Pamela has one in her "Unknown" section of the Vases  :(

Hi,
Not "Bohemian Ovals", to which it bears a likeness.
Just scanned through all Markhbeinn, Rindskopf, Reich, Stoltzle and Inwald pattern books, could not find this. Will check the others later.
I told you Glen would be along to correct me.
Regards,
Marcus
