I think if you use the appropriate keywords/speculations/lies in an eBay auction you can make almost anything "worth something".

You just have to check out the astronomical finishing prices for all manner of cheap tatt that sellers claim is haunted by powerful wish-granting genies and spirits.

don't assume anything - it's a minefield and does not answer the laws of glass. Things which in our perception are highly unexciting may skyrocket while attractive but abundant ones may prove unsellable. I was at the bulb vase collectors annual convention on Saturday and they have a raffle to decide who is allowed to buy what from whom!

Okay, a couple of questions :roll:

1. Why is Mr. S claiming that it is vaseline, if he hasn't tested it? (Am I being naive?)
2. Why has the same person put in several bids, when they were only bidding against themself. Is this person a fake put on by Mr. S?

I have purchased a few things on ebay, but they were scottish gaelic music books and there doesn't seem to be the same insanity there. But then, I didn't know to look for it either.

As Ivo said, partly why this thread got split out, hyacinth vases have a somewhat religious following and can reach quite surprising prices. There is a logic behind this if you study the subject and realise that the common output of one style of glass can mask that in the range only a few hyacinth vases were produced. No one collects the rest of the range...

It's true, with hyacinth glasses we do not really look at the art of glass but at the unusualness of the product. As they have been around since 1740 there is a lot out there with a lot of well known factories and designers involved. We collect with that in mind, but as it was a household item research is very difficult and a lot of very interesting glasses a mistery to us. Therefor to date our glasses we have to pick the brains of glass experts and yes, we are willing to pay for something rare, rare for us that is, may be not from a glass point of view. Patricia
