Lovely Monet colours to this satin vase signed Lagny
« on: October 23, 2006, 04:04:15 PM »
This is another from my last haul.. I am still working through trying to decide what is good and what isn't.

I really like this vase, it is satiny to the outside, smooth to the inside, seems to be cased.  There is an etched name Lagny to the bottom side - I can't find anything about Lagny except that it is a village in France.  Does anyone have any ideas of maker and time frame?

Sorry about the quality of the pics - my camera doesn't like these dark afternoons.

thanks!
Thank you very much!

Thanks Connie, doesn't look like anyone got any further than we have got... I DID find the Baccarat Lagny glass on ebay, and I DID find the village, and Della has found the Lemaitre connection...

I wonder if Kev ever found any more about his piece?  Kev??
Thank you very much!

Oops

I didn't even think to do a search on here and the post was before my time.

[[[Must do the obvious first, Della]]]

Glad to be of help Lynne. I have done a little searching on the Le Maitre name, but not getting much. Sorry!

No, nothing further discovered - other than Marcus's addition today to the other message :).

Since my images in the other message were on Tinypic and have long since drifted off into the virtual ether, here's refs to them newly loaded on GlassGallery:

Cameo Lagny signature
One side of Lagny cameo vase (Sig is to lower left of this photo.)
Other side of Lagny cameo vase

It's interesting to compare the cameo sig to the non-cameo one - they are very much of the same form.

I would assume that the signature is a template.  Interesting that the opal glass on the inside of your vase is like the opal on the outside of mine, and that the finishing of the top edge does look similar.

I think they are very nice quality nothing like the Yalle cameo copies.
Thank you very much!

Yes, quite probably, but on our vases they show enough differences to indicate different templates. But an alternative, at least for my cameo piece, is that the signature part of the cameo was worked by hand as part of the acid mask prior to dipping in the acid.

The mouth shape of our vases does have similar lines. See below for more photos of mine, which also show the mottled effect of backlighting.

Mouth shape - top view This shows the oval form - quite sensous!!

Side view showing curved form Also "sensous" in its own way.

Mottled effect with backlighting Here, the mottled yellow / brown glass gives a very nice summer or autumnal effect - in my opinion.

For completeness:
The size of the vase is 18.5 cm (7 1/4 inch) tall, 16.5 cm (6 1/2 inch) wide and 9.5 cm (3 3/4 inch) deep at the base narrowing to 6.7 cm (2 5/8 inch) at the mouth. It weights in at 1.47 Kg (3 lb 4 oz)

The inner layer is a thick clear glass with a thin yellow + brown (or is it a dark green?) mottling. This is covered again with clear and then a layer of brown. The brown layer has been etched partially through to reveal the design of plants and dragonflies and etched fully to reveal the yellow & brown seen through the clear layer.

It's all very good work. But I have never thought the addition of the 3D dragonfly body (which is also acid etched) with its bulbous green eyes to be an attractive feature.
