in James Mackays bookabout glass, on page 59 he describes a group of water jugs, which one is quite clearly fostoria cube pattern, now, he said they are 19th century british, and describes it as a star cutbase, water jug, loop handle, fluted shoulders, above a broad band of dimond lancets ? now is fostoria american or british? and is the pattern cube?

Hello,

I don't have that book you mention, but just in case;  you might want to see this.

http://www.glass.co.nz/icecube.htm

I'm not 100% sure, but Fostoria may have made a line of their cube "American" pattern for export too. There are at least 5 or 6 glass companies I know of, who made a very similar pattern. 3 of them in the U. S. A. Fostoria - "American", Jeannette - "Cube" or some collectors mistakenly call it "Cubist" and Lancaster\Colony\Indiana glass, who called theirs "Whitehall". The latter did buy out Fostoria glass and did badly remake some of the old "American" pattern pieces, but those are too easy to spot because of the obvious lack of quality control. --- Mike

yes Fostoria was made in England as well as in the US, they sent moulds over here so they could make there glass so as not to pay glass import tax

Aha! Thanks Ray.

I didn't know that.

I much prefer the Jobling version myself, even though I'm in the USA --- Mike
