Iittala, TS, Candlestick - part of the Vertica range?
« on: November 07, 2006, 01:11:33 PM »
Hiya, I recently posted a vase on here that was signed TS and I was asking if anyone could confirm if it was by Timo Sarpaneva.  Della very swiftly identified it as the small Iittala 'Vertica' vase by Timo Sarpaneva.  I've now got this candleholder which isn't signed but bears similarities to the vase (although obviously smaller in size and much thicker glass) - I've not been able to find out if the 'Vertica' range included candleholders or not. Any help would be fab - TIA, Pip.

Hi Pip, now I feel obliged to answer even if I don't know anything about Vertica. Somehow the candlestick looks 'too thick'. But, as said, this is a wild guess. Tried anyway.

Otherwise leave a message on the posting section of the site, and Marika may well get back to you with an answer.
Regards,
Marcus

Many thanks Graphite - I agree, it's much thicker than the vases but the striations and the flared rim are the virtually identical which is what's making me think they might be related.  Marcus, thanks for the link (it's a beautiful site even if I can't understand a single word on it   ) but I'll contact Marika as per your suggestion and ask if she can help.  Cheers! (It's great to have you back btw).

:? Lots of it is in English, Pip!    And the picture galleries don't require any language skills!

Nope you're right - I've had a thorough nosey around on the site and looked at a lot of the picture galleries - there doesn't appear to be any candleholders on there at all unfortunately.  I've got my Vertica vase out and compared the two closely and, although the striations to the sides are similar they're not exact.  I've come to the conclusion it feels very Iittala in finish but I don't think it's anything to do with TS's Vertica range. So I've made progress of sorts :-)

Hi Pip,

Sorry, but I can't find this candle stick in any of my books.
There are only the 3 vases shown in the Vertica range, no candlesticks.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

I have one of these (somewhere) and although it is "inspired" by Finnish design, it may not be so. I think it was made by Oberglas or Joska or one of the smaller Swedish works. The crystal quality is quite good but the item lacks definition - so I don't think it is top of the range...
