Topic: French/Belgian Acid Etched Cameo Glass

I have bought two pocket watch stands recently.  One is signed Val St Lambert and is lovely quality.

No problem with this one.  But in the same batch there is another unsigned watch stand, same size as the VSL one, but not quite comparable quality, with a different design of watch support in the middle.

Does anyone know recognise the pattern?  Is it also French/Belgian, or from another source?  Any light would be useful.

I'm bumping this just for today, as I am going to list the 2nd watch stand, and wondered if anyone had any ideas as to who it may be by?  

I am still considering that it is also VSL, but unsigned?

Hi Lynne,
cant be much help, but just of interest, i saw a VSL Perfume bottle in
green, at a recent auction, and i admired the fascinating work on it.
I left £60 , bit stingy, i think it sold for £120ish.

I sold the yellow one of these recently - and have just had feedback from the very happy customer, who says in the feedback, it is a toothbrush holder by Baccarat..

No wonder I couldn't find anything on it!

Yet, I have seen the exact same shape described as a watch holder.  So which is it I wonder?

How wonderful your customer is happy - maybe you should ask her what the Baccarat attribution is founded on?

I have - I'm wondering if she will come back to me, or turn her back, saying, It is what it is because I know it is...

I DID find a Baccarat toothbrush holder here  same shape, the central support was the same, but the finish to the glass was different.  But then maybe he was guessing !

To be honest, whilst the piece was lovely, and I glad the customer is happy, I can't see the quality I would expect from a Baccarat piece. Or am I just being swayed by a rather prestigious name?

I think you're just being swayed by a rather prestigious name. The Baccarat rose coloured item is indeed a  Baccarat product. Iif you're ever in Paris look at the Louvre des Antiquaires on the Rue de Rivoli, there is a dealer who specialises in the stuff (ground floor) and I tell you it aint rare, just expensive.

The VSL acid etched version of the same in amber, pink or blue is not quite as abundant, and I would consider it technically superior to the Baccarat pressed glass. The fittings would be indentical - it was not VSL or Baccarat who did the mounting.

I am pleased for her if she is happy - after all, everyone values things differently.

And I agree about the quality of the VSL work, I think the deep blue VSL signed one with the violets was streets away better than the yellow.
