Millefiori Factory paperweight
« on: November 28, 2006, 01:34:00 PM »
My hubby has just come back from Venice, and although I told him NOT to buy me any glass (too expensive and doesn't know what he's doing...lol) he bought me a paperweight.

You all have to be very nice about it as it's sentimental to me.  Stars are kind of my little 'thing' and he was quite emotional about finding it.  Bless him!

The moon's a little smudged and there's a tiny bubble inclusion, but I thought you might like to see it.  Acid etched to reverse 'Millefiori Factory -Murano'.   :D

It's actually a very deep cobalt blue colour, which I couldn't get to display properly.  :(

Aaahhhh, isn't he a sweetie?    It's a lovely little weight!  I understand the 'Millefiori Factory' was founded by Glass Master Michele Citon, a former partner of the late lammented 3Fiori, so their weights should be good and very collectable!  Also good to see genuine Murano weights are now being properly acid etched and  / or labelled!

How cute! I have a horrible weakness for night sky themed weights myself. Your hubby did a good job picking out a nice one.
I collect Scottish and Italian paperweights and anything else that strikes my fancy.

The information about Michele Citon was taken from this paperweight seller's web page:

http://www.muranopaperweights.co.uk/millefiori.html

The Millefiori Factory/Michele Citon moon and stars is similar to a long-standing design by American David Salazar, an example of which can be found here:

http://www.selman.com/cgi-bin/htmlos.cgi/009.1.7364697824419035142

Salazar has been making this design of paperweight (as well as using it in marbles and perfume bottles) for years. I am pleased to see the Millefiori Factory and Michele Citon back in play and the complete information about their paperweights (contained on the first web page above) indicates that things bode well for identification of the factory's future items.

The stars and moon design, of course, again brings up the interesting paperweight issue of what is rare, what is original, what is a tribute, what is a copy, and what is new?

Thank you for the information Leni and Wright.  :D   KevH was kind enough to send me that link earlier today too.  Perhaps my husband does know what he's doing then?  I must send him to Venice more often.

Thanks for the David Salazar link too Wright, I see his moon isn't smudged and his stars are all perfect, maybe working with such small millefiori is difficult?

Edit: Thanks to Glasstruffle and Lynne for the kind words too.  :D

May I just say that if the information had in fact been 'taken' from Jackie's website I would of course have given credit.  However, the information was imparted to me in person by Jackie at the Paperweight Collectors Circle Exhibition at Broadfield House last year, when Jackie was showing the first of the new 'Millefiori Factory' weights she had just received from them for the exhibition.

Just for the record.

Wright, the info may have appeared on Jackie's site, but the words were Leni's.    There is no plagiarism involved here as seems to be implied.

If we take your comments to their extreme, then everytime anyone comments on an attribution we will have to find every site that uses the same information and quote the links.  This is not what a knowledge site is about IMHO.

No knowledge exists in a vacuum, everyone has learnt their information from books, websites, lectures, conversations whatever.  Plagiarism is when somebody takes someone;s words letter for letter and passes them off as their own.

End of my comments, any further comment would belong in the cafe.
Thank you very much!
