Help with id on the fishy vase...
« on: November 27, 2006, 01:15:39 PM »
Anyone point in in the direction of a maker for this vase..?

It's about 22 cms tall and pretty heavy.. The large fish on the front and the shoal swimming around the vase are cut into the glass...

Both the shape and the beveled edge point at Strömbergshyttan, but you'd expect it to be signed. Possibly the blank was made by them but the engraving done in one of the independent workshops?

In any case, the whole thing looks very Kingdom of Crystal...

I may be barking up the wrong tree but take a look at this page from the 1960 Whitefriars catalogue.......

http://www.whitefriarsorg.org/memb1/cat-60/p32.jpg

Yours looks similar to the one on the left at the bottom.  It wouldn't have been signed most likely.....it doesn't give the height either, but if you think it is similar, why not put it on whitefriars.com where you may find someone who has actually got a Whitefriars version and could give a better opinion. I have not actually seen or held a W/F version, so can't really give a definitive opinion.  Emmi

The WF cat gives the height as 8.5" (It's next to the drawn diagram).

So the height is about right. My guess would be WF.

I love WF's 1960s cut glass, but it so rarely comes up for sale.

Thanks Emmi and Nic for the id... I'm pretty certain you're both right... So I guess I didn't over pay for £4 then!

Wonders if my luck will hold with my next item I'm about to post....

Is that a high 5 Emmi?   8)

Interesting to see the Whitefriars catalogue, I don't think I've ever seen the cut stuff in the flesh.  Or maybe I have and didn't realise it was WF...
Thank you very much!

I've only seen it once at an antique fair labelled as Strömbergshyttan with a £100 price tag.

I don't know how much WF cut vases are actually worth, but it was a little rich for my wallet.

*sigh*

I think the Stromberg ones have a different type of fish if I remember rightly but they sure are very very similar.  Gets confusing doesn't it?  :?  :?  :?
