This is probably a completely red herring, as I haven't seen anything like them before.  However, something about the way the top rim is finished makes me think of early Czech glass...   ???

Ah well, it's a bit of a stab in the dark.  :)

Owl and the Pussycat was published in 1938 so if earlier than that the symbology is unrelated.
