Davidson (269 Blackberry prunts) - help needed please
« on: January 30, 2007, 10:54:37 AM »
A friend of mine in Australia has found a small footed cake stand (aka flat topped comport / salver) in what she thought was Davidson's no. 269 (sometimes called Blackberry). It's a familiar pattern, made distinctive by its prunts that look a bit like berries.

I have communicated with Chris Stewart (our well known Davidson expert) and he mentioned that the 269 has 7 points on top of the prunts. Now just to complicate things, my Aussie friend looked at her piece and it has only 6 points on top of the prunts!

So, here is my plea. Can anyone who has a 269 piece please (pretty please) check to see how many points are on top of the prunts. I've been zooming around the web and every piece I have been able to look at closely has the 7 points.

We are wondering if in fact my friend's piece is a "look-alike" and not by Davidson at all.

Further bits of info to help you.

1. My friend's mystery piece measures 6 inch in diameter and is 3.1/2 inches high.

2. You can see a close up of the prunts here
http://www.geocities.com/carni_glass_uk_2000/PRUNTS.html

3. If you don't know what the 269 looks like, you can see a couple of items on this page on Chris & Val Stewart's Davidson website
http://www.cloudglass.com/Gallerypostwar.htm

So...have you got a piece with 6 points on the prunts? Have you seen or do you have a similar cakestand/comport  in this pattern? Any thoughts or comments will all be gratefully received. Thank you.

I will count prunt points when I get home. ;D Ask your friend to look and see if the base is ground or not and if made in England is impressed in the bottom. This design was produced for so long that it's entirely possible that not all the moulds had the same number of points - who but a saddo  8) glass collector would notice ;D. No offence is to be taken here!

Hi all.

Although in production from 1908 to the 1970s, most of the production of this pattern was in the form of oval and round dishes of various sizes. The early production was in the standard shapes for a Davidson suite – plates (oval and round, crimped and plain), dishes (oval and round, crimped and plain), comports, sugar, cream, low sugar, low cream, butter, celery etc. By the 1930s this range had shrunk to mainly oval and round dishes.

The only examples of the 269 suite I have on display are dishes – the rest are in boxes in the garage and very difficult to get to. All of the dishes have 7 points on the prunt. These dishes range from 1920 to 1970 in date.

I think this a first for GMB – never has a single feature of a glass design been under such scrutiny!

Regards,

Chris

Have you a picture of the comport?  Bagley's Katherine is similar - different in the centre though.

I have looked at 7 of my Davidson dishes and they all have 7 points on the prunt.

Hil :)

Thank you for your comments - sorry for the delay in responding (I've been out having slight emergencies involving punctured tyres).

Here are a couple of photos of my friend's piece.

I'll ask her about the ground base, Christine, and also the possible lettering (though I know she's looked at it pretty carefully so far) - thanks for the suggestion.

Chris - sincere thanks again for your input and your help with this mystery.

No ignore my questions, they aren't relevant, I hadn't realised you meant an all-in-one comport,  I was expecting a dish on a stand and those photos would show any mark

Your best chance is probably matching that base. (It's familiar for some reason).

Thanks so much for looking, Cathy, Anne, Christine, Hil.

Please, please, please - has anyone, anywhere got a cakestand/salver/stemmed comport like this?

Has anyone got a piece with a matching base /stem (as per Cathy's suggestion)?
