Replacement miniature paperweight
« on: February 09, 2007, 12:01:14 PM »

I have a Cox Jewellery/ Caithness Glass ring, early 70's I think.  The miniature paperweight has broken so I would like to replace it. It measures 0.5"/ 13mm.

Could anyone advise me as to where I could find one, please.

They are called 'Stones' and you could try Caithness which is likely to be the cheapest option.

These do come up on eBay from time to time but unless you have a 1971 hallmark it is not worth paying the premium for a Paul Ysart example. The other option is to remove a stone from a post 1980 non-silver item. Size could present problems.

Maybe try Peter Holmes - he seems to be still making weights containing complex canes to the same design as the stones, and may be able to make a stone, if he doesnt already have some.  Also I have seen for sale on ebay Jewellery containing stones that was  recently made by ....somebody  in Crieff.

However I do recall when one of the Caithness people (was it Margot Thiompson) came to give a talk to the NPS a few years ago she had a bag of stones so Frank's suggestion might be a good one.

However a couple of very rings have just sold on ebay for around £20, (see 160081072032   and 160081071983 ) so don't spend too much on it.
