Sowerby Jug Query
« on: February 14, 2007, 06:02:25 AM »
I just received my lovely Amber Sowerby jug from the UK. When I put it next to my Green version of the same jug I noticed quite a considerable size/shape difference

The amber jug is definitely wider at the top and a little more squat than the green. I was wondering is this just due to the items being hand made? I'm not sure of the process involved.  OR is there a chance that this is a Sowerby immitation?

Cheers,
Lyn

My green uranium Sowerby jug measures 13.5 cm across the top and is 18 cm tall. This is pre-War production. I would guess your amber jug is post-War - I suspect they are simply different moulds because they do wear out and I think this jug was produced over quite a long period.

I don't think it's a copy. The reason could be what Christine suggested (different mould) or possibly even something to do with the temperature of the glass as it cooled (slumped and opened up a little?)

Just measured my amber one and it's the same size as Christine's: 18cm tall and 13.5 cm across the top.

Very interesting. My green jug measures 18cm high and 12.5cm across whilst the amber is 17.5cm in height and measures 13.5 across. So it actually seems that it's my green jug that's the odd size  :D  Thanks so much for your input everyone.
Cheers,
Lyn

Lyn - my vaseline (green) one has the same dimensions as your green one does.

This jug was certainly made over many years and the mould set might have been re-cut or even replaced.  However differences of 1 cm don't surprise me as, after leaving the mould, the re-heating ("melting") process followed by the hand-forming of the lip and subsequent re-shaping (the pulling over of the lip distorts the top which then has to be restored to round - all over the chair by hand) can result in such differences.

Oooh .. I'm honoured   ;D LOL Thanks so much everyone for your help. They're such a pretty design. Do we know if there was much more made in this pattern?
Cheers,
Lyn

Lyn - I can't remember the pattern number, which means that there wasn't much of a range made while I was there.  There would almost certainly have been a tumbler to go with it, however, to make a water set.  I wouldn't get excited though - Sowerbys' tumblers were pretty horrible (IMHO!).
