Dragonfly - (Possible signature mark but NOT Capredoni!)
« on: February 18, 2007, 12:08:02 PM »
I have recently acquired this glass item - not sure whether to call it a paperweight with 45 mm maximum dimension and only 105 g.
(http://www.seelentags.de/pw/sonst85f250.jpg) (http://www.seelentags.de/pw/sonst85d250.jpg)
It depicts a dragonfly resting on a bud(?) - and has another dragonfly impressed on the base.
Question: is the dragonfly on the base just reflecting the one on top - or is this a maker's mark? If a maker's mark - has anyone come across this mark, or even the weight itself?

That is the signature mark for Alfred Capredoni, who made flat ice sculptures, usually of animals,  for Dartington ( I think they are still being produced) you will usually find a dragonfly impressed mark somewhere near the base of his pieces.

Thanks, Lynn !

Yes - he seems to be still active: https://www.capredoni.com/ - but at least today seems to be offering only ice sculptures (very much like the Mats Jonasson sculptures I own). On another web page, however, I found also paperweights and vases. I guess, there are not two Alfred Capredoni around - this one seems to live in Canada (after emigrating from Italy).

Anyway - I have sent an email, asking if "my" dragonfly is recognised.

There are good new and bad news: good news is that Chris Capredoni responded immediately (Sunday evening!) - bad news is that I still have to look for the maker of "my" dragonfly.

Dear Dr. Seelentag:
Thanks for your email.  Unfortunately we have never designed or manufactured this item. I am curious as to who did.
Thank you for the compliments on our products.
Best Regards

Now that is VERY strange... I should think they are pretty unhappy about his father's (I assume Chris is the son?)  signature mark being used by someone else.

I'm pretty sure they are not happy - which is why they are curious as who did make this item. There still are two quite "legal" explanations:
- my item could have been manufactured before Capredoni had registered their trademark;
- it may not be a maker's stamp at all - just mirroring the dragonfly on top.
After all, nobody (but god or whatever your believes are) can claim to have "invented" the dragonfly.
