Flygfors Coquille - or a look-a-like?
« on: February 23, 2007, 06:03:33 PM »
Hi All,

I've run out of places to look for the definitive answer on this one, and would be grateful for your input.  13" in length, unmarked, no touch marks on the ends but a very very slight rough place on the underside of the higher end.  Smooth base with a bevelled edge.

I thought Flygfors Coquille the moment I saw it, but I cannot find an example of this particular form in the examples of the range I've seen so far.

detail of coloured panel (ignore the speckles - it's the fireplace underneath - the piece is crystal clear) :

detail of base :

There's a piece of labelled Murano on ebay - 190085169313 - which has a similar colour panel, but it has much sharper ends and obvious touch marks.

Thank you for looking

Without the white trail around the rim, probably not Coquille. I have one exactly the same shape, but with an aquamarine colour, so will be interested to see what the outcome is.

...and I had one in royal blue, with the most bizarre, deeply ground out base.  I put it down as Italian as there's so many shapes on this theme from there.  I figured the base on mine was a weird glitch, as I've never seen anything like it before.

- it might be in the shed, but I think I've given it away (handy presents, all that glass in the shed...  >:D)

Max - your deeply ground out base could be Randfjordglass..........if you have "Fire & Sea" bottom right page 135.

David - if you can lay your hands on yours a photo may help as that colour might lead me somewhere.  Purple is rather common, aquamarine could take us to Ryd or elsewhere!

Well...might have been.  It seemed quite crude though...I think that's a definite maybe.   Cheers! :)

Here you go Cat: three images.

Mine appears to have a much more definite colouring and the base also has a well recess.

This just gets more and more intriguing.

David, yours has the same bevelled edge at the bottom, but mine has no sign of a pontil.  From the picture, the well on yours does not appear to be deeper than the "usual" well when we say polished pontil.  The "heavily indented bottom" of the piece I mentioned for Max is very obvious in profile.

How long is yours?  ;D

I have a similar bowl that is signed Erickson.  I was told that this piece is one of the limited number of signed Erickson pieces.  Kinda same style but no beveled edge.

Here is a link to my bowl.

It measures 12" (30.5cm) but I'm not sure it is a ground and polished pontil. Looks far too 'clean' with no marks and is oval, not round.

This might be Norwegian as Cat mentioned, I don't have any definitive info on this piece but I see a lot of them here
and seem to recall them being marked as norwegian.

Likely suspects are Randsfjord Glass (paper labels until late 70'ies), Hadeland Glass (altho most HG artglass is signed)
and Magnor (paper labels until 80'ies i seem to recall).

It's not the coquille series, one distinguising thing with Coquille, apart from the color palette, is that they were
all designs based on sea life, typically shells (coquille in french), sea anemones etc.
You should see white, clear and typically a "sea" toned green, blue etc.

I think most of the coquille range is signed also?

It could be swedish, in the 40-70'ies swedish and norwegian glassworks swapped people all the time
and designs were copied with small variations. The swedes were better at signing their work tho.
