Help to identify 3 paperweights
« on: February 24, 2007, 11:11:31 PM »
I have been asked advice on the following 3 weights - but am not sure (or don't know at all) - so your help would be welcome :).

(Click on images for larger view)
These look to me very much like 1930ies Indian "three-flower spatter pattern" weights - correct?

This one puzzles me more: controlled bubble paperweights were produced by many paperweight makers - so this one will be difficult - but that structure at the top looks fairly unique - can anyone identify this weight?

Thanks for your help and best regards  -  Wuff

The glass on your spatter weights actually looks better than the India spatter weights I've seen. I remember seeing a lot of spatter weights like that in gift shops in the 60s and 70s when I was a kid. I would say a 60s attribution seems more likely to me. As for where they were made, I have no idea.

Is that a hole in the top of your bubble weight?
I collect Scottish and Italian paperweights and anything else that strikes my fancy.

The red one looks as if it may have had something stuck on the top of it, that has since been removed?  Or is this the bottom? What's the other side like?

I have one like the bottom red one - there is an opaque glass "squiggle" rather like the stem of an apple that has collapsed into itself, which is what I am seeing here.

I have always assumed mine is Chinese.  It is OK, nothing special I don't think, and the glass is not fine quality.

Thank you very much!

It was the scuffing and scratching around the ring that made me wonder if there'd been something attached to the top, Lynne, but if there's more than one that seems less likely. :)

Red reminds me of a curling iron, but a bit out of proportion to be a model of one.

I am now going to be very rude.  I always think of mine as the one the cat pooed on.

Thank you very much!

Possibly Mount Royal for the red one.

Hi there Wuff very kindly put these pictures on for me I have now registered so many thanks for your replies.  The question about the one with the hole in, this is a large bubble inside the paperweight.  The paperweight has a smaller elongated bubble in the middle looking almost like a flower stem, with the spatter/splatter colours having a bubble in front of them making them almost look like something out of the day of the Triffids.  The other one looks almost like under the sea with seaflowers? with again a small bubble in front of the petal?  The top of one petal? looks like it has a small group of white fish.
The red one looks like an apple and the top is as someone else had said it is opaque and looks like the stem that has gone floppy.
I can post more photo's if I can figure out how to do it but I would appreciate any hlep with identifying the maker or what the actual style is.

Hi Pauline, and welcome!   :)

Some more photos would indeed be useful, particularly of the bases of your weights.
