I just received this paperweight which I bought about a week ago. It is signed Peter Holmes 2007, and has a Scottish Borders label to base. It is absolutely clear glass with a pink flower inside. ? Lampwork? . I was stunned at being the only bidder and getting it for a fairly low start price and don't understand why. Don't honestly think I have seen a Peter Holmes weight on sale here in Oz before this one. Are these mass produced and common? or was I just lucky??

Peter Holmes runs Scottish Border Art Glass - a small-ish studio. I would not consider his work to be "mass produced" in any way.
I think you were lucky. It's lampworked.

Thanks Sue, that is nice to know. I almost didn't put a bid on it as I expected it to go higher than I could afford. Glad I did!

Have a search on Frank's "Scotland's Glass" website - you'll get more info. there.
I rather prefer his vases etc. to pws (I really don't like pws)

Hi Jakgene
Peter Holmes produced many variations on this simple design and I have several in my collection - see attached.
They retailed at £30 - £40 UKP under the Scottish Borders Art Glass label and were excellent value for money
Best regards

Hi, Peter Holmes and Scottish Borders Art Glass are still trading, recently they started listing new PH weights on eBay.

I have a few from PH myself and I think they're great - I have always wondered why they don't sell for more,
his lampwork is quite nice.

Hi alexander
Peter Holmes was of course taught by THE master Paul Ysart and has the
chair PY used at Harland together with some of his tools in his studio at Hawick.
He produces a wide range of glassware and his son Andrew is also making.
The studio has an excellent gallery and is well worth a visit if you are in the
Scottish borders area. Mike Hunter (Twists Glass) is only a few miles away at Selkirk.

I am sorry, but I do not understand the comment. What it is "odd"? And what relevance does it have to the thread?

I just thought he meant a coincidence - me in Oz buying a Scottish paperweight and he in Uk buying an Oz one!

Oh, ok. Well ... it is early morning and I really ought to be sleeping by now. :spls:

Coincidental but not so odd. Paperweights, though heavy, are easily tucked into hand luggage or safely in the depths of a suitcase as a holiday souvenir because of their compactness.

Just making a conversation on the coincidence of you buying a British weight in Oz and me buying an Aussie on in the UK at the same time.
I think the Aussie maker now works in Scotland now though, I need to do some more reaserch. Hes called Mathew Ryan. Signs his work Matt Ryan.
Sorry for flaming Kev with my comment.
