Hi Alan

There is an excellent article in the 2012 PCA Bulletin that covers these intaglio weights.
Alan Thornton and Erhard Maroschek are the authors and Alan is a member of GMB.

They have proved that these weights are in fact French and made by Baccarat, appearing
in the 1885 Baccarat sales catalogue. There are also designs with a lion and a dog so keep searching !

Best regards

Derek

Hi Alan

The PCA Bulletin is a quality A4 sized hardback book produced annually by the Paperweight Collectors Association (PCA) in the USA for its members.

It always contains a good mix of articles on all paperweight topics. There are over 20 articles in this years edition which runs to 120 pages.

Although the book is distributed  to PCA members most paperweight dealers will also have copies available.

So join the PCA or contact a dealer!

Closer to home we have the Paperweight Collectors Circle (PCC) which produces three excellent newsletters a year under the editorship of Alan Thornton.  The articles are comparable with those in the PCA Bulletin.

Google paperweight collectors circle and find out more about us and maybe join!

Best regards

Derek

Hi.

All I can add to Derek's comprehensive reply is that you can find facetted and unfacetted versions of these weights, and that the PCA  Bulletin is a 'Limited Edition' publication, so it is not always easy to get a copy if you are not a PCA member.

Thankyou very much for your reply
I have since seen these facetted ones and I assumed rightly or wrongly that the ony reason they where facetted was because the became damaged and they had the dings ground out of them and of course they would have had to made it uniform
to make it look right. I googled the dog one and it just does not seem right facetted, be very interested in other peoples views.
kind regards Alan
