Title: Large Bowl - could it be Kaj Franck for Nuutajarvi? - ID=František Pečeny SU
Post by: Pip on May 23, 2007, 10:22:44 PM
I've sold the small triangular salts designed by Kaj Franck for Nuutajarvi and Arabia in the past in different colours however today I came across what I think could be the mother of them all - it's a big bowl and the shape and proportions are the same as the tiny salts.  The base is different however, the smaller salts having straight edges/sides whereas the big bowl has slanted edges but the base of the large bowl is finished exactly the same as some Kaj Franck glasses I sold Robbo recently.  Anyway, have a look at the links below - the second one shows my bowl alongside a Kaj Franck salt for size comparison purposes... TIA for any help.

Hi Pip,

How large is the bowl? I've a pink one of these, I think smaller than yours, 11.5cm across. I'd identified mine from Marcus' site as from the František Pečeny Sklo Union compote set, 1955 (see http://www.sklounion.com/SkloUnion/Sklo1.html (http://www.sklounion.com/SkloUnion/Sklo1.html), mine looks like the bowl in the top middle of the photograph), so yours could be a bigger version  ???

Hopefully Marcus will be along to comment ;D

Well, I can say this now, seeing Robbo's commented.  The colour looked immediately Czech to me, but the base finish threw me.   ???

Thanks Robbo and Max - I'd immediately discounted this as Czech when I got it because the base isn't right at all and I had owned and sold some small green Czech bowls which were very different in base and rim finish.  I've had Arabia glass in this bright blue before also so the colour's not necessarily wrong for Finnish.  HOWEVER, I think it could well be the large Frantisek Peceny bowl in Robbo's link because the distinctive slanted edges are clearly visible in the photograph - it's the base finish that threw me - it's not like any other Sklo Union glass I have.

Pip, I agree with you about the base finish. The one I have is much more polished looking / shiny than the Sklo Union vases I have. I do see the similarity to the bases on those Kaj Franck glasses.
