Title: Pairpoint...
Post by: w8happiness on August 06, 2013, 10:16:15 AM
Hello everybody,
last week I have bought a small Overall facetted weight with 5 rose canes in the Center and a garland of White/pink around.
It is scratch signed COS to the recessed polished pontil and all clear. Category: very nice and not antique -but pretending very well!

Alan thinks it is Pairpoint and I have seen he is right! Anybody with more Pairpoint material- esp. when made an by whom?

One Special info to Alan who is searching for a Gentleman over a blue White red spiral: please have a look at this:

http://www.antique-paperweights.com/pairpoint-glass.html

here you have a General, maybe not the same as yours, but rather similar!

(my board is typing capital letters without my influence...)
Kind regards Erhard

Hi Erhard.

What an awful website ! It is just a mechanism for getting affiliate fees by leading people to eBay.  Whoever put it together did not do their homework on paperweights...they have just lifted material (some of it completely wrong) from elsewhere.

I cannot see the item to which you refer.  Do you have the eBay number for it?

Hi Alan,
I did not mean to scare you that much-
it is just for the sake of seeing a General above a spiral for the first time since your question...so it is NOT on ebay but possibly a Picture from somewhere though they're print their Name on it....

please simply pull the page which opens in the Website given above a bit downwards, there is a b/w Picture of a footed spiral and next to it a b/w Picture of the General ...
no other way to get it otherwise... cheers Erhard

Hi Erhard

I don't get any black and white picture on the page! Just a green/white menu to other paperweight categories, and links to eBay items.  Maybe my browser sees it differently from yours?

Hi Alan,
here's a screenshot of it I hope it'll open,

if it don't I'll pick it up again and send it when I'm back from my days off,

cheers Erhard

or better: here's a link to the Picture: http://www.antique-paperweights.com/uploads/4/4/3/1/4431700/788369041_orig.jpg

Hi Erhard

Thanks - the direct link works. I don't know why the image is missing from my version of the page.

I have seen that paperweight elsewhere - it is in colour in Evelyn Campbell Cloak's book about Evangeline Bergstrom's collection (page 127 item 57).

I see that the website has the cheek to plaster their name across an image they have taken from elsewhere - and I see no credit by them for the part page you show (I am not sure which book it has been taken from).

I agree with Alan about the website referred to.

Extremely poor research and interpretations. No references to source information. Images copied from existing literature and presumably with no permissions, but with the author's web address added to the image.

And no author / owner contact details that I can find.

It's apparently someone called Paul Krause in the US, details can be found by entering the domain name here http://www.dynadot.com/whois.html (http://www.dynadot.com/whois.html)

not sure of the present status of Pairpoint, but I visited their factory about 1971-72 on Cape Cod Massachusetts. I bought a weight on that visit but sold it a few years ago. I'll check and see if I can get any present info on the business. As I recall, they were located just across the bridge leading onto Cape Cod. I think they employed about 10-20 people at that time. Memory is getting a little fuzzy these days.

Hi.  They were operating in 2007, and making some paperweights, as we called in there with other PCA members on a trip to the Sandwich glass museum. Alistair Ross had died not long before, and some of the paperweights he had made with Whitefriars canes were for sale (so we bought a couple...).  They appear to be still in business, according to their website.

Thanks a lot Alan,
I would like to attach a picture, to give an idea what it looks like ...
the facetting -shapes of pentagles and hexagons-is not very accurate and I have read that it is called "Grey facetting" when the edges of the facets are softened by the final polish
the COS scratch signature is also visible.
Kind regards Erhard
