Title: Mstisov or Chribska? ID = Borocrystal
Post by: Frank on July 06, 2011, 08:49:03 PM
Colourful lump that almost but just does not seem to match up with anything I can find in either...

I don't know, but Astrid has got one in her Picasa gallery which she feels might be Borocrystal...

Quite a loud bowl, isn't it? :usd:

Is it the same as this one Frank? http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,25231.msg142027.html#msg142027

If so, Dusan has one in his Novy Bor/Zelezny Brod album: http://picasaweb.google.com/exat53/GlasschulenNovyBorZeleznyBrod#5159816095697187554

Hi John, no not that one. But the one Anik mentions IS the same design and method.

Frank:

I think this is the same (and it has a factory label).

Superm a positive ID for Astrid too. Thanks. I presume getting a designer name not so easy though!

This one on Jindrichs site for Borské Sklo (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/IlVetroDiBor?authkey=Gv1sRgCOn1-ZaJlJjLAg#5449473836864968002) is very similar in style and technique, the publication dated to 1960s.

Here is my small collection of this multicolour Borocrystal range.

@Anik: yes, they are quite loud ;D -- but I love them...
The big platter is one of my favourite Czech pieces.

Subtle is great, but loud can be great too. :rah: :rah: :rah:

I would have said they are subtle rather than loud... compared to Murano equivalents.

Any hints on possible designers at Borské Sklo? Max Kannegiesser is the only name I could find and no obvious link other than colours with Borocrystal range.

Sorry Frank, couldn't find out more about this range either.

They are usually attributed to Novy Bor / Borocrystal, 1970s. (But could be produced far later, I guess).
I see quite a lot of them here...

Jindrich mentioned somewhere that the Borocrystal label was used up to the 70s. The example I showed had the standard Bohemia crystal label of 50s/60s use according to Newhall (assuming the one shown in the book IS yellow.) That would imply an overlap of label use which would not be overly surprising either.

Thanks everyone for helping me to an ID too! I'd seen the Borocrystal at several places, including some i'd be inclined to trust, but this is the first example I've seen with a label. It's indeed very colourful - especially in sunlight it's quite eye-catching (I'll add mine just to let it have a bit of company...)

Very nice colours, Astrid!

Interesting is this bowl in the Chribska 1999 catalogue on Jindrich's site: http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/CHRIBSkA1999?authkey=Gv1sRgCKjbrouFiseK2gE#5435068415081419618 (http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/CHRIBSkA1999?authkey=Gv1sRgCKjbrouFiseK2gE#5435068415081419618)

So at least similar items seem to have been produced there as well (and much later than 1970).

Michael:

Which bowl in the Chribska catalogue do you mean?  I see somewhat close but not a close match.

I find the colours on this piece cheery but not garish, which some of the Chribska tend towards. I bought my piece for the label, but I like it more than I thought I would.

It is the bottom bowl, hard to tell but it seems to follow the same basic approach in methodology but I find it a crude relation!

David, yes, I meant the bottom bowl (not the same as ours, but a very similar style with the blue blob in the base, the orange/pink colour combination cased in clear, and the hotworked bottom).

I grew very fond of my pieces as well -- nice shapes and sooo colourful :)
BTW, I still don't have a single Chribska piece in my collection although I have seen quite a few...

@Frank and Anik: have you seen any items from this range in one of the CGR issues? - I haven't. Funny, as this seems to have been a very successful range.

Hi Michael,

I don't recall seeing any items from this range in the CGR.  In fact, I don't recall seeing any item in the revue listed as 'Borocrystal'.  Sorry. (http://serve.mysmiley.net/sad/sad0090.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

Is this the same bowl/ashtray?  See the 1984/5 CGR article on Josef Rozinek:  http://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/Glasrevue19845?authkey=Gv1sRgCKKwjMXF74rzoQE#5557146386783837778

Great observation, Anik! These do look like the same range as our pieces...

And we have a possible designer name and date as well (Josef Rozinek, early 1960s)

Greetings from hot Vienna (37°C today)

I think a certainty he was Borocrystal's 'legendary' master glassmaker and would certainly have been able to execute this piece...

Found this beautiful ashtray today from the same range (although in a rather unusual shape).
The colours in this one are blending much more delicately than in my other Borocrystal pieces...

Michael, forgive me for asking a stupid question, but does the top bit glow?  :-\
And is it really from the same range?  It seems a little less heavy and a bit more feminine.
Title: Re: Mstisov or Chribska? ID = Borocrystal
Post by: rocco on July 24, 2011, 08:33:57 PM
Hi Anik, it doesn't glow, but it has the same neon-green colour towards the rim as my other pieces.

Not sure about what belongs to this range (I guess this style was in production for a long time), but despite of the shape it is very similar -- a blue blob in the clear base, and the exactly same shades of orange, pink and neon-green mixed in the top part. It has lots of wear so should have some age to it...

The (Czech) couple I bought it from had another ashtray from this range as well, similar to Astrid's piece - most part clear with the colours more in the inner part, and the typical blue blob in the base.

BTW, I have checked the other Borocrystal ashtray once under UV, but the green colour didn't respond, so not Uranium.
