Title: I'm pretty sure this one is old English, but which maker?
Post by: RescoCCC on August 16, 2014, 09:48:04 PM
My first English weight, (assuming I'm correct that it is English). I'm thinking possibly Richardson, but that's just a guess. What do you experts think? It measures 3 1/4 inches in diameter, and 2 3/8 inches high. The base is a frosted ring surrounding a crudely snapped off pontil mark. The glass is quite heavy.

Hi.  I think you are correct - it looks like a Richardson piece to me.  The base treatment varies, I suspect reflecting different dates of manufacture, but I am not sure of that.  I have seen footed bases with pontil scar, concave polished bases, rather crude unfinished ones such as this...probably in equal numbers.

Thanks, Alan, I appreciate the help. What do you think about repolishing? This one has four small shallow bruises as well as numerous light scratches. I think it can be done with very little impact on the profile, and I don't have much money in the weight. Good idea? Bad idea?
