Title: Printed 20/50 dollers tumbler
Post by: Tigerchips on April 01, 2007, 12:17:56 AM
Something tells me it ain't worth as much as what's on it.  ;D ;D ;D

On one of the coins it says: Panama Pacific Exposition San Francisco.

Perhaps that's just what's on the coin rather than it having anything to do with this tumbler?

Anyway, do you know who made it please?

Thanks, Tony.

The fair was in 1915 and you might find the value is higher than you'd expect. But ID'ing the maker is beyond me!

Difficult to say from a photo, but it does look a lot newer than 1915. Could it be a 50th anniversary, or similar?

Does anyone know when gilt was first silk-screened (which I assume this is how it's done)? I've always thought about mid-1930s, but could be mistaken.

All the gilt patterns I've seen on the Sherdley/ Ravenhead glasses seem to be Ravenhead rather than Sherdley - ie 1964 or later. But that could just be when Ravenhead acquired the right machinery, or decided that was what the punter would go for.

I see no reason for this not to be transfer printed nor, for it to date from 1915. Bigger pictures are needed including close-ups covering the edges of the print, top sides and bottom.

You may be right Frank: it just appears more recent than 1915.

Gilt was applied to Chance items from 1950, but this was hand applied using a brush. The earliest Chance item with gilt applied was 1960 (Golden Lagoon), but none of the Royal crests used gilt for the 1953 Coronation.

I do have a Johnson Matthey advert somewhere advertising gilt, but haven't tracked it down so far. Not conclusive as it may have been developed much earlier.

One of the coins has 1907 on it. Perhaps the coins themselves may help to date it? One has some Roman numerals: MCMXV.

It looks like multiple transfers 3 or 4 at a guess. I guess it was better quality souvenir ware for the exposition. Nice.

The glass does not look to be from 1915 to me.  It looks more like 1950s-60s.

I believe the glass(es) was made to commemorate the famous set of coins issued at the 1915 Panama Pacific Expo

Sounds sensible and explains the apparent anomolies.
