Title: Amazing New Glass Discovery! A "new Portland Vase" found!
Post by: sph@ngw on October 14, 2009, 11:16:02 AM
Yes believe it or not, a vase very similar in shape and size, (but in better condition) has just been located in the ownership of a Belgium family- a glass collector!
Martine Newby, an expert on Roman cameo glass unearthed it, and it has been shown to a meeting of glass curators from the world's leading museums who are excited and impressed by it.
A long and involved series of tests will now take place, by Ian Freestone  of Cardiff University, who worked on the Portland Vase repairs, and Bonhams may be selling the vase in the Spring of 2010.
What sort of price it will fetch is fantasy, but if proved genuine, it will probably be the most valuable piece of glass ever sold, so £2 to £5 million is possible.

Truly amazing work, and how strange that, being in the hands of a glass collector, that it's never come to light before.
I'm so glad and relieved that I don't actually like it, 'cos I could never, ever afford it!
