Title: IOW Arene vase ?
Post by: keez on September 01, 2010, 03:49:32 PM
I’ve looked through a lot of Mdina & Isle Of Wight sites, but couldn’t find the decor.
In the Artius site, there were some IOW Studio Glass Aurene coups (Michael Harris?), they were described as rare early, without the pontil mark.
My vase has a lot of things in common, but the big difference is, it has a lot white in.  The inside is fully white and the base.
It's much taller as the samples I saw 28,5cm and it is very thick glass, it weights 1070 grams.  There are a lot of fabrication imperfections, so maybe it's an early experiment, or that's why it's not signed.  A few inside bubbles, a big wrinkle at the inside top and a turned wrinkle at the small part of the foot.   These are definitely not cracks, but molten glass layers.   The base has a hard broken pontil without a pressed mark.   Its rough but not sharp at all, but I think that they broke too much of the edge, at the right.

It's in a super mint condition, no chips even not a tiny scratch on the footring.  I thought it was brandnew chinese (maybe it is :)

I've not a clue what it is, but it's not Isle of Wight Studio Glass, Aurene!

They use coloured enamels, the foot of anything would not be blue like this is, the decoration in the glass is completely different, this is far too thick to be IoWSG and is not remotely any IoWSG shape. Sorry.

If I had to guess, I would say China or somewhere similar. It's big, heavy and OTT, just for a start.
