Title: Czech sculpture -- what is it? And is it ZBS?
Post by: Anik R on February 08, 2012, 01:11:15 PM
I love my new sculpture though I haven't a clue what it's supposed to represent... is it a toucan? A penguin? Something else?

It's 16cm tall and weighs 579g.  I am 100% sure it's Czech, but not so sure of the designer or glassworks.  None of my other Zelezny Brod animal sculptures are as flat as this one, and none have a hole which pierces through.

All help and comments warmly welcomed. Thank you.

Oh Anik,  that is one beautiful piece of glass.....I am green with envy, but so pleased that you have it.

I would say it was a penguin,  but there are others who know so much more about ZBS (the glass that is!) than I do, and I hope they are able to help so that we can all learn from it.........Fabulous!!

Thank you, Rosie.

I also see a penguin, especially when I look at the first photograph... the penguin is facing left, its head nestled into its shoulders, its wings held slightly back, and it's fat little tummy making folds near its feet. It looks like its trying to keep itself warm.  :)

The amethyst colour is quite ZBS, but I haven't seen this design / style in other ZBS animals.  I have found two penguins, but completely different to my sculpture:  1967/12 CGR (https://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/Glasrevue196712?authkey=Gv1sRgCID427yaguawkwE#5444302660988649346) and  1991/8 CGR (https://picasaweb.google.com/Jindra8526/Glasrevue19918?authkey=Gv1sRgCLb0x47_uun7dw#5513430072288056498)

Maybe someone has seen something more similar to mine?

Hi again Anik, if you go back to Jindrich's 1967/12 CGR  link and go back to page 4, there is on the top RHS a penguin that is so very like yours but with his beak just a little more lifted......do have a look and see if you think it might have been one of that series.

I've taken a look, but I fail to see any similarities...  :-\      But thank you.

Sorry, can't be of much help - but I have to say: I like it! :)

I think that in some older ZBS thread this aubergine colour (I wouldn't call it amethyst) was identified as a more recent colourway.
But certainly the shape could be a much older design...

I saw a ZBS hedgehog today in the exact same colour with the spines in clear glass -- quite nice but I resisted.

Rosie, it was in a local shop. It was the same design as your neodymium one :)
If the prize would have been a bit lower (it was 18,- Euro I think) I would have bought it...

Aubergine?  I suppose it could be aubergine...  I'm hopeless with colours.  But Michael, I can't believe you passed up the hedgehog!  I paid a little more for my lordy-knows-what-is-it sculpture.

P.S. Darn Rosie, you've beat me to it. :-\

Maybe a penguin who keeps falling on his beak, he should take more ice with his drink, plenty about .

I thought I'd post some more photos, including a close-up of the hole. It seems to change from being a penguin to a parrot to a toucan in a matter of seconds.   :-\

JP, I accidentally overlooked your post.  Maybe you're right.  Or maybe I should have a drink myself... I might just discover that what I've really got is a fancy-shmancy "object d'art" that is meant to stimulate the mind and senses as an allegory of nature's tragic quietus in the hands of man.

Or maybe not. ;)

EDITED TO ADD:  JP, now we've cross-posted...

Anik, I think the abstract shape makes this a really intriguing piece!
(It is the most stylized glass animal I have seen so far :))

@Rosie: I'm sorry to tell you that when I walked past the shopwindow today the hedgehog wasn't there anymore...

Thank you, Michael...  and I agree, it is intriguing.  I know it doesn't matter what kind of animal it's supposed to be, but it would be nice to find reference to the glassworks and designer.  Maybe one day...

Whatever it is Anik  it will always provoke compliments and discussion, and one day you never know,  you might find another one so similar with a label that it all becomes clear!!
Just enjoy it and let it make you smile!!

@ Michael.....sorry to hear that.....I would have liked it for a special reason......if it comes back on display again,  please will you let me know?
Rosie. :)

Upon bOBA's suggestion, I sent some photos to Moser, asking if they might know the maker of my sculpture.  In their very kind reply, I was told that it might be a special-order item, though the specialist does not know from which glassworks.

I found it interesting.  But I'm still leaning towards ZBS.
