Title: Kaappikello
Post by: adam20 on October 29, 2011, 11:50:40 AM
Green Kaappikello vase by Riihimaki - Helena Tynell - just delivered today

Any idea of colourways as I want to collect these - Designlasin seems to state three but I am not sure

Thanks Adam

Sorry to tell you Adam, it doesn't quite look like a genuine Kaappikello to me. Shouldn't it be a vase, not a bottle?

I wondered as well; the surface structure seems to be different (and I don't know if the clear casing should be there)

Here are two links to older threads here on the board where similar items were discussed (if I remember correctly some of the bottle versions were probably Italian, but others Riihimäen):

Design Lasi seems to be a group rather like whitefriars.com that puts up only items they can confirm are actual correctly attributed pieces.  This implies that unless a memebr has all/most of the pieces in a range those missing are less likely to be shown until they can be verified.

The same is true to some extent with Perter Harder's site harder.net where Peter has been collecting and publishing his collection - but in fact some 6 -10 photos are from me as I had pieces to fill in gaps.  It is to be hoped that factories like Iittala, etc. will supply Design Lasi with back catalogues as Holmegaard/Kastrup have decided to do for Peter Harder.

All the bottle versions are Italian and came with square stoppers with plastic ferrules.
Some are marked Italy to the vase.

The patterns copied (but uncased and in non-Riihimaen colours, and frankly of a much lesser quality) are Kaapikello, Emma and Aurinkopullo.

Don't worry Adam, the smaller genuine have the funnel necks, and the largest the rims.

The fake Aurinkopullos are marked Made In Italy to the base, and come in the medium size.

Nothing with, or designed to take, these plastic & glass stoppers was made at Riihimaen.

Talking about Riihimäen Lasi decanter stoppers here's a picture of the kind of a stopper I remember having seen on a Grapponia decanter we had home when I was a child. Robert, can you confirm? Have you seen this particular stopper in other RL decanters?

That's exactly the stopper one would expect to see on a genuine Riihimaki item, and not a huge glass and nasty plastic affair like the Italian copies.

In case it's of interest, that looks to be the same stopper also used by Alsterfors and Ekenas:

There's another 'Kaappikello' style bottle currently selling on ebay with plastic stopper....the price is somewhat surprising!

Hi Wayne
Hope you're well
Yes! indeed it does, and far nicer than the plastic Italian ones
