Title: Some New Buys - Riihimaki, Magnor, Jane Charles
Post by: David555 on May 01, 2006, 11:56:58 PM
Hi

I realised I have not done a "Some new buys" post for a while

I buy quite expensive glass like a lot of members on the board, passion doth empty the pockets. However, I also love to bargain hunt when I can, car booting and charity shops. This is a mixture of medium priced items and bits that cost 0.50p

This Riihimaki bowl is lovely and was 0.30p in a charity shop - it has the original sticker which tells me it is new but how new?

http://img303.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rihbowlpink3wj.jpg

I was amazed to find this quite cheaply made glass box in a heart shape was etched Tiffany and has what looks like a hand engraved signature - anyone know about these? Inexpensive at a car boot sale

http://img340.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tiffany2ho.jpg

This looks the part as is real heavy - A perfume bottle by Jane Charles cost a fair bit, are they still making this particular model or has it been withdrawn (no reply from website)

http://img337.imageshack.us/my.php?image=jcharles2me.jpg

This is a lovely bowl 8.5” long etched "Magnor" to base, know a bit about the company and this seems 1970s - not expensive in a local shop

http://img235.imageshack.us/my.php?image=magnor3er.jpg

I love this as without the sticker I would never have thought Canada. Shows they made stuff in same style as much Murano and Czech, anyone know the maker - partial label

http://img332.imageshack.us/my.php?image=canada5xj.jpg

Last but not least I probably paid too much for this - but I love it! 8.5” tall in clear glass to base evolving into a lovely green mid way. Two main trailed handles and then trailed decoration from base up - polished base with a lot of age. I thought it may be Italian, but it could be good 60s Czech - anyone know?

I was just looking at my shelves - all stacked up and there is a layer of Monart, Chance, Monart, Chance like a sandwich.

Many people would say ahhh get the Monart away from the cheap Chance glass - but all glass was created equal in my lovely glass room :D

Just as much care and design went into some cheaper pieces (We have found this out through David's excellent Chance website) as it did the more expensive.

I love one off creations but the mass produced sometimes gives design a time and place.

I also find that more time and care went into the mass produced in the 50s & 60s than does today.

I find this even with expensive things! I have a Seguso bunny from 70s and bought and modern companion in Italy recently - WOW - the lack of definition and skill is amazing – I must post this at some point LOL

Some lovely things there Adam - you had some serious bargains by the looks of it!  I particularly like your turquoise vase with the glass blobs on the side - sorry I can't help with IDing any of them.

I was thinking the signature on the Tiffany piece might be Elsa Peretti, who is their silver jewellery designer.  I'll have a look at a piece of my (slightly contraband...lol) jewellery later and see it the sig matches up.

Jane Charles is a contemporary Scottish glass artist. Her creations are all one-off pieces, although she may make pefume bottles in similar styles. She exhibits regularly at the Strathearn Gallery in Crieff, and at the Scottish Glass Society Exhibition. She make blanks for Julia Linstead who is an engraver.

glass box in a heart shape
presumably top quality crystal  :?:  Looks good for 70s VSL
But try as I might I can't make the signature to be that
so Van *********  :?:
See www.tiffany.com
a search on "van" or "val" + "crystal" brings up nothing but it's interesting to see what they are up to.
Sadly designers + makers are mostly UN-credited.
 Heart+crystal brings ............... a cobalt or red glass heart paperweight
..........hmmm styling looks v similar
OMG found it: Elsa Peretti - Bingo !

Adam - fantastic finds!   :P

Do you know if Magnor marked all their glass?  I had a piece quite some time ago which I was led to believe was Magnor -  a lovely deep red bowl with thick polished rounded edge, but it wasn't marked.  I'm never sure whether these pieces are Scandinavian or Murano.  Similar type bowls crop up on ebay but are often described as being Murano.  I'd forgotten about Magnor, so thanks for the wakeup call :P

Thanks everyone

Elsa Peretti seems likely for the box - which is crystal as Peter says although quite plain - it's a trinket box

Peter - when I was in Milan in April I went to see the Helmut Newton exhibition and stopped at that exact photograph

Jane Charles comes up on web as working from Newcastle these days – I wonder if there if there is more than one Jane Charles, some sites show highly sculptural items, while others show ranges of hand made glass

Hi Anne, I don't know that much about Magnor, I think my piece is 1970s but they are still going strong, I think they have always been situated near the Swedish border in Norway, last piece I had was marked but I don't know the complete history ref this

Just for interest's sake I thought I should mention that I have visited Magnor Glasverk. It is a just "stone's throw" from Eda Glasbruks. The Swedish - Norwegian border lies between them. Magnor is very close to the border - it's open to visitors and has an interesting little glass musuem with a few old moulds on show.

Thanks Glen

It looks idyllic from some pictures I have seen.

I was wanting to ask you about a pressed glass shoe I posted a week ago (as an example), it was bought along with above items for £2.00.

You may already have seen the post - but I will repeat here .......

Pressed glass shoe in amberina - very well made with no nasty mould lines, also had a lot of built up dirt when found and shows some age wear.

I think it is a match holder with the strike pad on the bottom or sole of the shoe (pic 2)
5.25" long, 2.5" tall - opening is 3"long x 1"wide x 1.2"deep

I know that Fenton (and L G Wright for Fenton) have made Daisy Button shoes in "amberina" but I don't know the item(s) well enough to say if they are similar to yours (although they do look alike, but the photos I have in the L G Wright book are small).

Sorry I can't be any more help. Maybe Connie can.

There's only one Jane Charles as far as I know. She is a very highly rated artist. She does do sculptural work as well as perfume bottles and the coloured blanks for Julia Linstead.

Adam P -

I will need a picture of the front of the shoe.  I need to see the detail of the toe and middle section of the toe as it goes to the lip.  A picture of the bottom would help also.  There were several makers of these shoes and they can be hard to differentiate.

Thank you for those excellent pictures, Adam P.

I can see that it isn't Fenton, Duncan, or Bryce.

I found where Boyd was/is making shoes in this pattern with the bow.

http://www.rubylane.com/shops/five4us/item/8075

But I also found this one which states Kanawha with label.  This is new to me.  I didn't know that Kanawha ever made slippers/shoes  :?

Boyd's may have bought the mould from Kanawha when they closed.

Thank you so much Connie

Your post and the links given are excellent.

I see that the Boyd shoe is marked with a B for 1978, the site seems to suggest they marked year by letter. My piece has no mark.

The Kanawha piece is very much like my shoe, it is amberina and suggests no marking.

Your suggestion that 'Boyd's may have bought the mould from Kanawha when they closed' seems plausible - if my shoe is by Kanawha I wonder what date it might be - I am only a beginner with pressed / Carnival glass :?

A short history of Kanawha Glass Company summarized from Popular 50s & 60s Glass, Color Along the River by Leslie Pina:

When Dunbar Glass Co. in Dunbar WV closed in 1953 some of the former workers joined together to form Kanawha Glass Specialities Co., named after the nearby Kanawha River.  In 1957, they changed the name to Kanawha Glass Company.  By 1960 they began production of colorful decorative glass including crackle glass (for which they are most noted).

In 1969 Kanawha purchased Hamon Handcrafted Glass in Scott Depot, WV. Hamon crackle glass maintained its identity under Kanawha. Hamon made hand mould blown glass and Kanawha made pressed glass.

In the early 1970s Kanawha began making cased milk glass. My own comment:  It is often mistaken for Fenton glass hence my interest in Kanawha.

Production continued until 1987 when Kanawha was sold to Raymond Dereume Glass Inc. in Punxsutawey, PA. The glassworks closed in  1989.

So from all that you piece, if it is Kanawha, dates from 1960 to 1989.  My guess would be from the 1960s when they were making the most colored pressed glass.
