Title: Lion Sfumato Paperweight
Post by: svazzo on February 16, 2007, 12:49:29 AM
Hi everyone!
Just bought his paperweight and wondered if anyone had seen a similar piece.
It has an sfumato technique, but I didnt want to say it was Murano until I heard other opinions.

Th epiece is fairly large at 4 1/4" long.
Any info/suggestions would be great!

I've seen a couple with human faces by an artist named Chris Belleau.

I just looked at some pictures of Belleau's work. It looks like he used a different technique. This weight has a lot more bubbles than his too.

Hi again,
Yea, I looked on the net and found his website. There is 1 example that with a man face on it, but I also think the technique is different. The other pieces that had faces on them looked like they were worked from underneath, maybe carved and then cased back with glass.

Hi Javier,

This looks like some FM Ronneby, Sweden, pieces that I have come accross.

I had looked closely at my Ronneby owl that sits on my desk, waiting to be worth lots of money... >:D and discounted it.

Somehow the bubbles are much crisper and the whole thing doesn't look the same.  Javier's one is quite a bit softer and more sulphide-y looking if you know what I mean.  Colour's a good match though.

The colour and the interior looks just the same as Anne E.B's owl:

Yes, that's the same as my owl (who is called Ronnie btw...) but I just thought it was a bit sharper then the lion.

But maybe I'm just being picky, and looking for reasons why my first-thought-attribution is wrong!!

Hi Javier,

I just saw this post! And you have now peaked my interest but the pictures are gone? Have they been deleted? Could you please add them back again! Thanks!

Ingela

Hello Ingela,
Sorry about the photos. I had them on a section of my website that I deleted earlier. I forgot they were posted there. Here they are again!

Ah!  Javier, I'm always doing that...

Looks like your lion is one for the gallery... I try very hard to remember to put things I will want in the future on there.

V.Nason also did pieces with similar effects and colour, but without the included bubbles. Ronneby is my guess, but Ingela is better able than me to confirm.

Hi Javier,

This is indeed FM (Färe-Marcolin) Konstglas Ronneby.  I have seen two
different paperweights with the lion, M-78 and M-79. Yours look like M-78.

I have created an album on Webshots with the pictures I have of M-79. There
is also one picture showing both paperweights, taken from a FM catalogue
from the 1980's.

Hello Ingela!
Thank you so much for doing the research on this piece.
It is a very nice weight. Can you give me a little background on the company?
Are the lions unusual or hard to find?
Just curious. Thanks again!
Great pictures too.
Javier

Hi Javier,

The company is FM Konstglas in Ronneby, Sweden. It has been mentioned from
time to time on this message board, mostly in the Glass section.

FM is often referrred to as Fratelli Marcolin or Fare Marcolin but this is
not correct . FM stands for Färe-Marcolin.

Here is a short presentation taken from a FM catalogue from the 1980's.

In the 1980's they changed the company name to Marcolin Art Crystal.
They closed down in Ronneby in 1991.

Here is a link to Marcolin Art Crystal with their current collection:

I do not know how unusual they are but they do not turn up very often.

Ingela
