Title: Who said Chance glass wasn't collectable?
Post by: David E on May 09, 2006, 12:30:57 PM
Now the auction has finished I can point everyone to it:

Posy (Handkerchief) Vase (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7411044932)

With less than two hours to go this was stuck at £28.00, but finished at £200.50 — sure, it's a very uncommon one but I'm quite staggered

Jeez, most Venini fazzolettos don't realise that. Oh, and Birmingham has more canals than Venice as well!

Well...knock me down with a feather!!! Unbelievable!!!! Maybe I should think seriously about selling my Cut Pearl intaglio set?   Just be my luck it would die a death!!!  Emmi

bludddyyyyyyy hellllllll!  That is truly amazing!

I'm lost for words.  It does seem truly extraordinary.

Like Emmi says though...if I were to sell my Escher vases, they'd probably go for £2.50 or something.  THere's just no telling with Ebay which way it'll go.  :?

Emmi, the Cut Pearl should realise a much higher price, but as with all things the presentation is all-important. If you want me to write a little html code that you can insert into the eBay listing, this should enhance it. You shouldn't have a problem with your photos though, but a really detailed close-up would help I reckon. 8)

List it on Friday evening for 10-days. That way you get two weekends coverage and it finishes on a Monday (quiet and therefore less opposition IMHO)

Max: same applies! :)

David, thanks so much for your offer....I have now got to grips with the basic e-bay html + border thing theyn offer....and it would still look better than this one that's just gone.  Trouble is I am up to my eyes in a moving house operation amongst other things taking up so much time, but I may now seriously consider it.  I noticed this one was an open auction starting at about £2.00.....Scarey! But i also think a high BIN price is also scarey for buyers!  What do you think?

I do think that David had a great deal to do with the high price too.
Having a site and reference to refer to, definitely does help when selling an item.
Davids great site was used in the listing 8)

Or was it you selling it, David       :?:

My own thoughts is to start it at a very reasoanble price (£29.95, perhaps) to encourage people to at least look. Plenty of mouth-watering piccies will persuade them well enough that this is genuine. Be very verbose with the text as well and make sure there's no doubting the validity and desirability of the item (you've probably seen my long-winded descriptions )

But even starting at 0.01p wouldn't be a problem as I know there are enough people who will pay big bucks for this - probably even more if it was the ruby intaglio.

I really don't think you'll have a problem getting a 3-figure sum, although you could set the BiN at a silly price just to see if anyone bites :P £350, £400? You never know...

Another thought is to split the two items and sell them separately.

Finally, of all the Posy vases, this and the Ruby are the only ones I would always have on display with absolute pride. They really are the bees-knees 8)

 I'm feeling guilty now! I said to Anne a long time ago that it's quite frightening that people are hanging on every word to sell their own items, so I've tried hard to be as subjective as possible. Even minimising the use of the dreaded "rare" word :D

Pre the web catalogue Pirelli sold at 2 to 5 pounds. Now they sell for ten to thirty times those figures.

The principle as old as the hills, get the information out there AND seen then up go the prices.

Richard Dennis is well known for taking this to the extreme.

That's very true, but I wonder how sustainable Chance glass will become. If demand exists, of course...

Richard Dennis? Is he the publishing magnate?

So... what's the next collecting craze, so we can all jump on the band-wagon

Emmi: you can always start it at £49, £99, £149 or whatever, but 99p does have a ring to it! Seriously, I think it will sell quite easily and wouldn't worry about a high start price as anything worth its salt and described well will usually reach a good figure.

Now, yes but he started as a humble dealer and then had the idea of doing a book on all of the unsaleable stuff he was accumulating. I presume he still has his upmarket store in Ken Church st.

Victor Arwas did the same thing with art glass. He started with money and filled a warehouse before publishing, the rest is history.

I would have thought that Chance glass was made in sufficient quantities to have a large enough collector base to sustain stable prices. Probably made more pieces in one design then all of the Monart ever made.

eBay is one of the best marketting tools on the web for specialist web-sites, I always encourage quoting.

My stamp collection has been mostly marketted on eBay and I have had over a hundred sales off eBay as a result. The only limitation is that the single link has to be an info site, so I link to my Me page and place the sale link there. This is what you learn if you buy one of those guides to getting rich on eBay.

Hi Pip, yes, feel free to link: the more exposure the better. I'm trying to educate people selling their "1950s" handkerchief vases with 1970s labels that they are much later, and that Margaret Casson did not necessarily design Swirl!

Good tips Frank thank you, and David thank you also, however I'm embarrassed to admit I'm one of those guilty of wrongly attributing Margaret Casson to Swirl   (who was it then???)

Good question. Next?

No-one seems to know. She designed Wild Rice (52), Night Sky (57) and Green Leaves (1958) to the best of my knowledge, but there's no mention of the Swirl designer. I did ask Tony Cartwright but even he doesn't know.

I'd love to know purely to give the guy/gal proper credit for one of the most iconic 1950s designs :)

Hey, I just realised that if I put 1958 as
Code: [Select]
(58) it gives me this (58)

Title: Who said Chance glass wasn't collectable?
Post by: David E on May 10, 2006, 09:14:51 AM
An incredible sum, but it only takes two anxious bidders wanting the same item to push the price up 8)

I'm still uncertain about the use of the term 'rare' to describe any Chance slumped glass: the reason being they probably produced 'scarce' patterns in thousands before dropping it from their range should it prove unpopular. Night Sky is such an example.

Then again, if 99% got thrown away or broken over the years, I suppose it then becomes 'rare' by default :D

 Sorry, just having a 'semantic' moment...

With regard to this pattern, it was a genuine Chance production item and so far in about nine months of scouring eBay listings, this is only the third. Came in just black and red as far as I know.

I checked that one out some time ago, Frank. No luck on the web site but I'll drop them an e-mail to see if it jogs any memories.

I still have the vain hope that the Swirl designer can be properly recognised. :?

That's quite surprising! According to Macromedia some time ago, I think they reckoned that 98% of the world's computers had Flash installed, but I always had serious doubts about that claim

There are some industries that refuse to allow it to be installed: MoD is one such. Hmm, I wonder why... (rhetorical!)

The museum is a centre for design researchers. Another option that you could follow up is the design history department at the V&A. This is currently a groovy area of study so it is well peopled with good researchers - it should be possible to track down the designer. I also believe their is a designers guild that might help.

Flash is banned in most corporate environments as it is considered a security risk. I have not worked for a single corporation that allows it - only smaller operations. It can be very frustrating as a lot of small software companies only have flash sites and you have to call them for a print-out of their website by snail-mail. Naturally, unless you have seen the product and know it to be worth looking at, you do not bother and stick to the non-flash vendors.

As to my website it shows that many glass interested people use fairly basic systems without adding bells and whistles. Accordingly the majority 89% are windows users with IE6 65%. Interestingly 35% are using Firefox now, it really is gaining ground on Microsoft! Actually it is 35% Flash now, just looked again. But as my visitors are in low numbers the statistics change a lot.

I don't know what this "Flash" thing is, but sometimes I have to wait AGES for a page here to open because of the things that come along with your signature, Frank. It's generally after I've used AdAware and Stinger to clean up. I presume I don't have "Flash"? :?

Go to: http://www.designmuseum.org

If you click on the 'Flash' version and it asks you to install the Flash viewer, then you haven't

Some 'Applets' really slow my system up for some reason and http://www.chanceglass.co.uk is one such example. Not a great fan of them.

Ooh, I've been watching this for days! But it'll be interesting to see what it goes for. You'll also find some others going for surprising prices, like a chocolate & cream 'Wide Band' model that's currently £51.

Hmm, not a bad idea – would be nice to recognise her contribution!

For a photo, see the Chance section in LJ's 20th C Factory Glass. It quotes the four textures as: Hammered, Flemish, Stippolyte and Maxine, which is top-right in photo (a fine basket-weave that you can just make out). I'll have to see if I can use that photo...

The Choc & Cream 'wide band' is the item on eBay* – that might need naming if no ex-worker from Chance can remember, or if it's not documented.

But 'Bowey' it is otherwise.

Edit: * I don't mean the colour, but the pattern type (Wide Band)

7414653500 - £86.21 (the buyer is a serious purchaser of these!)
I've actually got one like this as well    :P

There is another 'Bowey' vase coming up soon in blue.

Also:
7414519896: £102.20 - red 7" 'Grid' pattern
7414572961: £36.55 - red 4" Psychedelic
7414312595: £41.00 - purple 7" Cordon

Hi K, I was fortunate enough to get my Escher for just a tenner but it had small chip on the inside rim. Very difficult to find though! But I have seen them going quite cheap recently (not the Physco ones though!)

Incidentally, the official name for the Escher is actually Carré — sorry not shouting but just so you can see the accented 'e' properly :P Apparently they never sold well, hence the reason they're now so collectable.

Hey David  :D

I actually spoke to my Mum last night  , you'll remember she's a mad glass collector?  She reminded me she has three large hankerchief vases in her wardrobe (where else? lol)...

One's yellow gingham and the others are plain.  Looks like I'll have to sell them for her.  :P

Post by: David E on May 26, 2006, 09:24:26 AM
Glad you spoke to your Mom

I've starting to log all the eBay sales of select vases (trying to monitor every single Cordon or Bandell would be a nightmare :o ). The only 7" Gingham that's sold in the last 30 days is a white one and this reached £28. However, I think they should do much better.

IF they still have their labels, then the price goes absolutely mad: a 4" yellow gingham with label got £26.56! But a 5" Cordon in orange with label (but looking like a 4"!) – the plain pinstripe – recently got £74.50

The size to always go for is 5" and I only have two myself. These are the scarce ones and should fetch a premium.

EDIT: The 8" ones are not very common either, but in all likelihood, your Mom's are 7" high (but pray for 5" :) )

Well.. a clear glass Chance posy vase would be worth getting!

Incidentally, there's another scarce model on offer: 7422830767 – a 7" (18cm) blue Carré. A black model fetched just over £200 and actually prompted this thread in the first place.

Frank, it's always the unrecognised items that become the bargains - the orange Physchedelic was one such case, of course.

K, as a suggestion you could use Anne's Glass Gallery - it's there for the benefit of GMB members. The problem with TinyPic is that the photos have a limited 'shelf-life' and will eventually be discarded.

http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk

The vase you show is the type I have seen before so I'm assuming this other one is an oddity and have asked the seller for use of the photo. Yours will still get a good price though!

Yeah I thought it would be more 'natural' to go dark colour at bottom then lighter colour. Wonder if all the wide band models have a 'dark side'!! Or do you think someone at the factory had a sense of humour & thought they would leave the rest of us puzzling over oddities for years!! Purchased a 7" black cordon recently which exactly fits the transfer (no clear glass at edge) Wonder who spent the time getting an exact fit???
Title: Who said Chance glass wasn't collectable?
Post by: David E on August 30, 2006, 05:26:43 PM
Chance were always experimenting and these oddities can often be test pieces. The 'correct' way is white, light colour, dark colour, so this one is very odd.

As they were silk-screen printed, it could just have been someone using the wrong enamel at the wrong time!

With respect to the Cordon vase: it is possible these was enamel sprayed rather than silk-screened, which doesn't allow printing to the edge. Difficult to tell the difference, but if you use a magnifying lgass you may just detect a slight texture of a regular pattern (the screen). Sprayed vases would not have any definable pattern.

However, if the white portion is smooth as a babies botty, then you're looking at opal glass (very rare) - see Nic's topic...

http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6869.0.html

This vase is rare on three counts: opal glass, no pattern and 8" tall   :D

well have had a good look at it & am really none the wiser!! It's definately 7" & appears to be clear glass (although it is really hard to tell with nothing to compare it to!!) the pattern feels the same as all the other cordon vases I have (7" & 4") am in the process of borrowing a magnifying glass & my husbands eyes for a closer look!! Have looked at Nic's & it does have the similarity of the pattern to the edges though so at least I'm not completely odd!!!!  :?

When you are measuring the handkerchief vases, are you measuring height  to the highest point or across the widest part of the rim?
Title: Who said Chance glass wasn't collectable?
Post by: K on September 01, 2006, 12:51:24 PM
to the points (roughly!!) Dencill is the expert I struggled to find a ruler!!

Measure vertically to a point. This is only a rough guide but it does help to distinguish between the four sizes: 4", 5", 7", 8" (10, 12.5, 17.5, 20 cm)

Well done: now get the 4" and 7" ones to accompany it (I have both, but not the 5" one!) - but I do have a complete set of rrd polka-dots :D

K, if you can supply a photo of your oddity I might be able to tell you a little more.

Thanks, those came through fine.

As the white goes to the edge it can be one of two finishes:

1. Opal flashed glass - this is a glass surface, not sprayed, so will be very shiny.

2. Enamel sprayed - this will appear duller than a opal glass finish.

However, looking at the photos, I would say it was spayed enamel and then silk-screen printed with the Cordon pattern. If it were opal-flashed the colour would be a lighter-grey and not the brighter finish exhibited on yours.

But for all that, it's still quite uncommon and probably an earlier model.

Seems in very good nick too if it's an earlier model, no wear on base & a nice black colour

Hi David,
This is another problem of glass researchers! As people start to learn about companies, they push prices up - and as you say, it only takes two people with rushes of blood to the head.
Cathy.

Bah!  Bought a honeysuckle triangular dish yesterday in a charity shop.  Forgot it was in the boot of car, and accidently tipped it out onto the drive whilst looking for something today.

What a waste of £1.50!!!   :x

Felix ("Tutenkhamoon/ Creasus") Dennis is the magazine magnet, poet and wine lover btw!  he is planting a 20,000 hectare Forest to be known as "the Forest of Dennis" in a secret location and has completed over half of it I believe!
How do you hide and keep secret a 10,000h forest? Must be almost visible from the moon!!!!!!! :o
Yes, I have met him, and he is quite a character............and a non stop smoker!
Don't think he collects glass though! He suggested I design a Mausoleum with stained glass windows......! (For me, not him as he will be buried in his forest under a wooden pyramid tomb!)

I just happened to mention it to a buyer who had come to collect some Whitefriars, and he bought it on the spot for a price that seemed to suit us both.  So a good result!

Naturally, I spent the next day wondering if I had undersold it, but hey!  Money in the bank!  got to be good to take the profit, eh??

There was a documentary recently on this forest and his plans looked most impressive. But I suppose he can be forgiven for being a smoker, if he's planting all that lovely wood :)

Edit: I believe it's in Oxford somewhere

Felix Dennis was being interviewed on our local Radio Cumbria recently about his poetry and read some of it out. He has a new book/CD (http://www.amazon.co.uk/When-Jack-Sued-Felix-Dennis/dp/0091912563/sr=8-1/qid=1168052203/ref=pd_ka_1/026-6545619-8696468?ie=UTF8&s=books) out as well which I'm going looking for when next in town. He sounds like a wonderfully eccentric sort of chap.  ;D (He didn't mention the forest though.)

At a tangent (as usual  ::)) slightly, talk of secret forests reminded me of this:

Maybe Felix Dennis could have a pyramid shaped tree-art shape...  ;D

Thanks 'K' (it's "David" BTW!) 8)

This is the small Flemish texture and, as you say, isn't listed on my site - however, this really does not look like a 5" to me as the folds are too irregular - more like a 7" or 8" (I have already noted these sizes).

I've sent the seller a mail asking for clarification on the height.
Title: Re: Who said Chance glass wasn't collectable?
Post by: David E on January 27, 2007, 03:19:01 PM
I had a reply from the seller. The actual height is 6¾-inches, so it is a standard 'medium' handkerchief vase.
