Title: Anyone else own this Wedgwood vase? Some info would be appreciated please.
Post by: Tinker-Taylor on September 22, 2009, 04:50:23 PM
Hi

I bought this little vase today because I'm getting a bit of a 'thing' for pewter coloured glass.  Can anyone tell me the range and designer please?  It's 4½" tall.  I have searched but found nothing yet.

With thanks in advance,
Stu.

The designer was Frank Thrower, it was part of the range he designed for Wedgwood (after Ronald Stennett Willson retired) when the two companies (Wedgwood & Dartington) collaborated. They were made in two sizes, 11cm and 14cm and in the 'colours' clear and midnight, code number is FJT7.

I am always so grateful when I get a response to these enquiries.  That you have gone to the trouble to respond provides me with a well-needed reassurance that society is not completely on it's knees.  May your life be forever filled with happiness!

Hi,

Came across this on ebay today-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GLASS-VASE_W0QQitemZ220368319796QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Art_Glass?hash=item334ef9b534&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Think it is the same- can you figure out what the etched mark on the listed item is  Stu? Would be nice to have a pair??

(May I just add for ref:- Designed by FT in 1982, "George" candlestick in plain midnight- have the benefit of the book, page 67).

Hi Sharron

Wow - it's a candlestick - that's surprising.

I could really go mad on this 1980's stuff.  I found a large Brutus at our local car boot sale for £1 the other week and it's just about the nicest thing I own.  It's funny how it's possible to end up liking styles I would least expect to over others which I originally thought I favoured.

As for the one on ebay, how surprising that you found that!  Mine seems quite a bit darker, so I think I will give it a miss for now.  Strange markings they describe... nothing at all on mine.  Do you think their camera also focuses?!   :24:

The only mark i can think that it maybe (all be it they have described it very odly) is the portland vase mark which was used late 1960's -1970's (page 230 in millers 20th century glass byandy mcconnell) but that doesnt tally with the dates of these candle holders..??? unless they used the mark later than the 70's

Hi Stu,

Seems we are liking the same items- I too own a Brutus 8.25"- is that their med or large?- acquired in the same manner as you.... Love the way the light plays on the violet hues of the piece, regularly look out for them at the right price...

Hope you don't mind, but here are a couple more of my recent car boot finds, along with the Brutus:-
"Juliet" rose optic rose bowl
"Ming" vase in Midnight Optic

Would recommend the Frank Thrower & Dartington Glass bookalogue by Mark Hill and Eve Thrower.  I bought mine from Eve off Ebay accompanied with a fab dvd- the glass is just stunning.  Regularly thumb through my copy on a daily basis.  Would be happy to scan you the relevant pages and email them to you if you would like to take a peek.

Sorry I do get a little over enthusiastic at times

Hi Sharron

We're all guilty of that type of enthusiasm I think.  Strange lot we are!

I like the 'Juliet' and 'Ming' but can't think why anyone would want to flog any of these pieces at a car boot.  Thankfully they do though, eh?   ;D  I will defo get the book because I am heading off into Thrower-land.  What a designer!

Here's a picture of my car boot 10¼" Brutus next to an 'Onion' vase (which I paid too much for on ebay recently).  And the mad part is... I prefer the Brutus!  Maybe it's the quiet dignified aspect?  I always remember anything of quality in the 80's was often dark and serious looking... apart from the black ash furniture!

I also have the 6¼" Brutus, and I am guessing yours is the medium one unless someone knows different.  It's the last of our local car boots this Sunday  so I'm going to spend all day looking for one!

This one (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,21653.0.html) is also very good for Thrower fans. Shows many, many more examples. Often to be found a less than list price on a well known auction site

I will second that, a very useful book, I would like to claim the above info was from memory but it was really taken from the First Twenty Years. Also used it to ID a FT66 vase on Sunday, they were only made for two years so probably a bit harder to find than some.

Have placed my order for the book, can't have a much higher recommendation than you guys!

Am I being dim Christine but what is "unstruck flame"? :-[

The colour in Dartington's flame red glass was produced (I'm a bit shaky on the details) by taking the blown item back to the glory hole so that more heat could be applied. A reaction within the glass produces the colour and the more heat the darker the colour can be. This is why there can be a lot of variation in the colour of flame red items from Dartington.

So I would guess unstruck means that this extra heat was not applied after blowing and the resulting colour of the glass is amber and rare.

Wa-hey!

I found this little 5½" Wedgewood vase today.  Here it is drying next to a piece of German (not even West German) pottery... which I collect because "rifle range" pottery seems popular in my neck of the woods, and I always think it's better to diversify than get bored.

ANYWAYS....I digress....

This here vase has a sticker declaring "Wedgewood Devon Collection" but I don't have any books apart from Miller's and they are quite...erm... and wondered if anyone knows who designed it, what it's called, etc.....?  You just need to stand on your heads to look at it properly...  I'm sure the upside-down thing will not make it any trickier for you clever people.

This Wedgewood and Dartington stuff gets me going enough to say that I will never sell any of it, so this one is a keeper!

TIA and BIG LOVE ON YA!

Hi Stu & Emma,

Can just make out from the 1984 Canadian Devon Collection Poster in the back of that book.....

EITHER:-
Devon Posy vase Ref 211/8510  Height 6.5"/165mm  OR
Devon floral vase Ref 209/8510 height 8.25"/220mm

This collection was also aimed at the US, Canadian and other foreign markets. Handmade in 24% English lead crystal and designed by FT.

All the above gleamed from that book.

PS. The one Christine told us about- L. Smithson, "The First Twenty Years" is for sale on Ebay 170387258826, should you be vaguely interesested.

Yoo-hoo!

Thanks Sharron.  That's exactly what I wanted to hear, of course.  What a perfect attribution that was!

I've gone FT mad - it's official.  Once they're on the shelf, they look so fab.

Hope you had a great day today.

:)

Some of us are *really* clever - we can flip the house so the glass is the right way up!  ;)

BTW did you know the Ming comes in ribbed and unribbed?

Hi Everyone

With regard to Sharron's post, the vase is just over 5½" so would the two options still apply?

Also, here's a picture of a Dartington vase I have just bought today from a charity shop.  It has the etched "D" on the bottom, and stands 5" tall.  Pending my buying the book... can anyone tell me what this one is please?

TIA

Anne, Ming Vase? isn't the pic of a "Devon collection vase. I am struggling to read the small print, but I have a Ming and it looks somewhat different .

STU- "Devon" was also produced as a bud vase Ref 208/8510 height 5.75"/145mm and
Bouquet vase at a wopping 7.5"/190mm ref 212/8510.  Lots to go at then....

As for your last post, I can't actually see the book clearly enough to determine which one it is. So I have scanned the relevant pages and emailed them to you, see if you can determine?

(I too picked up a nice little piece of Dartington, Optic effect, had the remains of a label imprint, which dated it 1987+)

Oh now that is nice.  What a cutey!

I suppose my original dark one must be the 5.75"...?  They couldn't have been precise heights every time, could they?  Or maybe they could...

I am probably going to beg my wife for that book when she comes home, so look away everyone, it won't be pretty. :)

So can we say that my latest one is by Mr Thrower then, or shall I throw it out?   :)

Has anyone experienced the scenario in charity shops, whereby they ask if you want it wrapped and you think 'd'uh!  yeah! and then they wrap it like chips and your stomach goes over as they man-handle it across the glass topped counter?

I love charity shops and all they stand for but I think they should teach their staff how to handle glass.

Moan, moan, moan....... :D

Stu, your latest vase is the small Etruscan FT404, 1986. Only made in clear ripple glass.

Anne's confused, bless her  :-*

The Wedgwood Ming and the Devon vases by FT all come in ripple (optic) and plain, and clear and Midnight.

Hoy missus, I'm not that confused. :kissy:  I'm just late to the table.  ;D  Stu mentioned the Ming somewhere in this topic and I posted a pic of my two Mings side by side and asked if he knew they came in optic and un-optic (or whatever the word is!!!)
