Title: 'Miniature uranium rocking horse elephant - ID = Houze Glass
Post by: Paul S. on January 15, 2012, 03:05:44 PM
I remembered to look in Barry Skelcher before posting, and there is in fact an identically modelled example shown  -  but which according to the author appears to have limited fluorescence, and is a noticably different shade of green.      This one is a very yellowish green, and fluoresces like a trooper.      You can see from the underside that some poor soul had the job of grinding down the underside mould seam  -  hope he was wearing a face mask!                   About 3.75"/95mm long, and no wear, other than the obvious.
Just thought I'd post as don't recall seeing one previously, and it may be of interest.             The author was reluctant to date his example, and had no clue as to the maker  -  and I'm none the wiser, although it's just possible that the stylized elephant might be a little Disney  ish  -  so perhaps 1940's/50's ??   -  however, Skelcher does offer the suggestion that it might be the top of a blotter, possibly.         If anyone does know the maker - would be grateful to hear, and thanks for looking. :)

Reference:     The Big Book of Vaseline Glass  -  Barrie Skelcher  -  Schiffer  -  2002  -  page 160.

thanks, you may well be correct  -  I'm sure the States were far more into stylized cartoon figures than we were, around that time, although I don't quite see it as a Dumbo character :)

Hard to say although if it reacts to blacklight then prior to 1942 when U.S. military took control of all Uranium compound stockpiles used by industry.

thanks again to both of you :)  - they are great little characters, although despite looking again, there is nothing marked on mine whatsoever.
