Title: Orrefors fish graal question
Post by: chuggy on August 17, 2006, 06:42:03 PM
I've got a superb example of a fish graal vase, sold all the others over the years but always hung onto this one. Question is I was reading somewhere the other day that these were introduced in 1954, now my one is dated 1945 and hand signed as shown, so just when were these first produced.

According to Lesley Jackson (20th century factory glass) Hald created the first of his Fish Graal patterns in 1936. After the war Hald returned to his favoured medium - engraving. Can I see a picture, pretty please  :D

There are *identical* ones shown in Bill Gearys' book 'Scandinavian Glass - Creative Energies'.  One is slightly taller, one is slightly more spherical than yours.  Just for your information.  :D

The beauty of these is they claim no 2 are ever the same with the designs of the fish and weeds etc always different. I've had about a dozen over the years and this is definitely the best decorated of them.

One of the stalls at last year's Harrogate Glass Fair had several of these and they are superb. I drooled!

The first drawings by Edward Hald for fish graal appeared in 1936

The graal number is from the year 1946.

It is my understanding the fish graal were produced until 1987. Large quanities were produced estimated at 30,000.

Thanks Bill I guess that taking the war years into account then this one from 1945/6 will rank as quite an early one.

Coincidentally, on Tuesday I had to photograph my own piece of Fish Graal for a magazine article:

http://www.glassfairs.co.uk/fishgraal.htm
http://www.glassfairs.co.uk/fishgraal-sig.htm

The signature appears to be quite different to that shown on the base of Paul's vase. The signature is smaller and more controlled, there is no date and the pattern number uses a different format '301-G'.

I don't know why, but I have always considered this vase to be an early example. Can anyone corroborate this?

David Hier, your fish graal was done in 1972.

At Orrefors, the artists did not sign their works with one exception in the 1980's demanded they certain works. There was a revolution.

The Orrefors works had employees sign the work and enter the data in written legers. I have gone through these legers which are quite interesting.

I presume you based that on the '301-G' marking?

David.
