Hi - two links
1) This is a gold cloth backed glass dish c1960 - 5.5" x 5.5" the colours on the glass which is like a moulded tile are amazing - it's like enamel - there is lots of red writing on the back but it is too washed out for me to make out anything but the words Murano and Venice - I would like to know the maker - link http://tinypic.com/b712bn.jpg
2) This is a really heavy decanter in emerald green - it weighs and is 15" high - it's in perfect condition and took some cleaning after 40 years of grime - I see these listed in books but there is never an attribution - it is not signed - I love it as it has beautiful proportions and is undamaged - the bottom is ground and polished and so is the top (stopper) link - http://tinypic.com/b712xj.jpg

1st one is more likely to be made out of copper coated with enamel

Loathe though I am to disagree with Ray ;), my immediate feeling on this is pigskin glass... we had a discussion about this some time ago, as I found a piece last year and then Sandra replied about it one she had as well... some are Canadian but it's a traditional Mexican glass craft apparently. Hi David555. I have a very similar shallow dish. The back, like yours, appears to be coated with a gold plastic type material.

However, it has the remains of a label still on it with what appears to be MADE IN CANADA 'MAYFAIR GIFTS' PORT (?) / **** PRAIRIE". Some of the letters are worn and are difficult to make out.

Underneath it has some instructions on how to clean - i.e. with a damp cloth... I would imagine it was made for the tourist trade, but perhaps someone can confirm. Its interesting that you have a very similar one that appears to be Italian.

I've never heard of pigskin glass :oops: . What on earth is it :?: :? I made the mistake of washing my dish (completely ignoring what bit of the instructions could be seen), and the backing started to come away from the edges. I had to rub them down very gently with very fine glasspaper to make it look decent again. That's why the gold backing cannot be seen on the 'aerial' view. Thankfully it didn't spoil its appearance, and it looks as if it has always been that way! I just wish it was a huge oil painting instead of a piece of glass (or should I say, as well as, because I really love it, even though it is probably worth very little). :lol: I must get my oils out and have a dabble...

Just as a thought though... David555 says his dish has a Murano and Venice mark on the back... I wonder if this could be one of those pieces from Murano/Venice in south America? These were mentioned elsewhere as well recently I seem to recall?

Is the corner photo on the pic the signature saying Murano? Can you try a better photo? I wasnt able to read it. Looks like a symbol other than words.
Maybe thats not what you photographed?

Thanks everyone - I also have never heard about 'pigskin' glass - I collect Italian 1960s enamel on copper (as well as all glass - for my sins I am a designer/artist and get inspiration, I do buy and sell a lot on eBay as well though)- At first I thought that is what this was - but it is glass or really thick heavy enamel - the wear on the base tells me this is 1960s 70s - in terms of getting a closer picture - I have tried and it is just a blur - I am now doubting I see Murano (auto suggestion from other bits) printed and having heard Canada mentioned I think at the top area I can see that, but to be honest its a blur and age does do this to paper bases - I have a few bits of this and can see why even though the backing is a gold painted paper composite - the word 'pigskin' would be used as originally that may have been the material used - here is a really big pic of the mark , though I doubt it will help -

I seem to recall Sandra's piece had a red stamp on the back... her pics have gone though... Sandra if you're still reading this, could you please repost your images for us to compare with David555's piece? Mine doesn't have any markings on the back at all, also the backing on mine looks and feels like pigskin rather than paper... although I'm sure that there will be more than one maker of this type of work so variations in backing are to be expected I suppose.
