Title: Funny looking cut glass ashtray

I was hoping somebody could identify this funny looking ashtray along with it's age please. It is cut glass and flashed (i think) much like that seen on my Ruby flashed Chance glass. Does the round cutting indicate a British origin and does this dark colour indicate a modern product?

Somewhat off putting is the mould line running vertically through the centre. Well, it put me off buying it anyway.

I think it has been re-gilded on the metal as it doesn't look right.

I don't know about you but I like it.  :)

I would guess sixties and the metal looks OK to me. I had an ashtray with similar looking metalwork. You probably should have bought it if it was cheap

Seen these before TC - personally I rather like them! I know what you mean about the similarities to Chance intaglio, Christine.

I left it at the car boot but my mother picked it up despite the fact that I had seen it and left it. This just shows you what I miss.  :lol:

Glass finds me, it doesn't matter what I do.  8)

Sure it is copper flashed and cut-to-clear; either Bohemian or Italian and "inspired" by older Saint Louis pieces - but I don't get the reference to Chance - which is printed in imitation of this imitation?

Christine and I were referring to the Chance ruby and blue-flashed intaglio items as produced by them during the 1950s. The circular cuts are very reminiscent. See examples on my site.

if there wasn't a mould line...
first idea on view without reading was Rotter Lübeck - but these are not moulded afaik

Thank you Pamela for making me look at this item more closely.

I think I may have made a mistake, apologies.

The mould line is on the ruby parts only. No sign of a mould line on the cut parts or on the inside of the ashtray.

So can we presume the ruby parts are moulded and the clear glass is hand blown? I'm not really sure about the process involved when flashing glass, it is all beyond me at the moment.

Or does the mould line on the ruby parts indicate blow moulding?

The ruby is folded around the initial bubble with a wooden spatula, then reheated and blown into a mould - which will have to be hinged because of the shape of the article. The rest is cold cuts...

Am I right that Rotter bears no mold lines?
